The Investigation of Fiber Surface Condition from Basalt-like Rocks for Enhanced Industrial Applications

Yurii Chuvashov et al.

Summary: The article presents the investigations on the surface properties of basalt fibers from rocks and highlights the impact of acid treatment on their structure. The results show that acid-treated basalt fibers exhibit high porosity and developed surface, making them suitable for the production of composite materials with various applications, particularly in filter materials.

Synergistic toughening and electrical functionalization of an epoxy usingMWCNTsand silane- /plasma-activated basalt fibers

Dong Quan et al.

Summary: This study found that plasma treatment of short basalt fibers can enhance adhesion between the fibers and epoxy resin, leading to improved mechanical properties and fracture toughness of the composites. Synergistic toughening effects were observed when using plasma-activated BF/MWCNT hybrid modifiers, showing potential for developing strong, tough, and electrically conductive epoxy composites.

Cellulose Nanocrystals Influence Polyamide 6 Crystal Structure, Spherulite Uniformity, and Mechanical Performance of Nanocomposite Films

Daniel A. Osorio et al.

Summary: CNCs can induce a chiral allomorph and nucleate small uniform spherulites in PA6 at low loadings, resulting in stiffer nanocomposites. Higher loadings lead to CNC aggregation and non-spherulitic crystalline features. Overall, the reinforcement mechanism of CNCs in PA6 is dominated by morphological changes, rather than percolation.

High mechanical performance based on the alignment of cellulose nanocrystal/chitosan composite filaments through continuous coaxial wet spinning

Qian Gao et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals with high crystallinity exhibit high mechanical stiffness and strength, but their dispersibility limits spinnability and orientation. By oxidizing nanocellulose to obtain regionally oxidized CNCs with carboxyl groups, and using chitosan as a sheath solution to induce orientation, oriented reinforced composite filaments can achieve a high mechanical strength of 104 MPa with an orientation index of 0.73. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of these filaments increased significantly compared to unmodified CNCs spun fibers.

Mechanical Properties of Hybrid Graphene Nanoplatelet-Nanosilica Filled Unidirectional Basalt Fibre Composites

Ummu Raihanah Hashim et al.

Summary: Basalt fibre (BF) is a promising natural reinforcing material for polymer composites, and when modified with nanofillers like graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and nanosilica (NS), it shows enhanced mechanical properties. The incorporation of hybrid nanofillers contributes to the improvement in the mechanical properties of the composites, especially in terms of modulus and strength. This study demonstrates the potential of BF as an alternative to synthetic glass fibre for mechanical components and structures.

Cole-cole plot of graphene nano filler disseminated glass fiber reinforced polymer composites

G. Rathinasabapathi et al.

Summary: By incorporating nano fillers into epoxy resin, the dynamic mechanical properties of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers are significantly enhanced, especially at a 6% weight of nano fillers. Graphene nano fillers exhibit better dispersion and phase integrity compared to Multi Walled Carbon Nano Tubes.
