Electrical stimulation of titanium to promote stem cell orientation, elongation and osteogenesis

Juan Shong Khaw et al.

Summary: Electrical stimulation can manipulate cell growth, orientation, and remodeling. Using a custom-built bioreactor, this study investigated the cellular responses of human mesenchymal stem cells to electrical stimulation. The findings suggest that continuous electrical stimulation improves stem cell orientation, proliferation, and differentiation, providing a new direction for targeted therapy in medical devices.

Microfluidic Processing of Piezoelectric and Magnetic Responsive Electroactive Microspheres

Luis Amaro Martins et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetoelectric microspheres of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and cobalt ferrite (CFO) were produced using microfluidic technology. The microspheres exhibited high CFO dispersion, cavernous structures, and good encapsulation efficiency, and were mainly in the electroactive phase. They showed potential as active materials for tissue regeneration and piezoelectric applications.

Electrical stimulation: Effective cue to direct osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells?

M. Guillot-Ferriols et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the different techniques to electrically stimulate MSCs to induce osteoblastogenesis, and summarizes the best conditions for inducing MSCs osteogenic commitment by electrical stimulation. Electrical stimulation activates different signaling pathways to promote bone formation. Despite heterogeneity, scientific evidence confirms the potential of electrical stimulation as an osteoinductive cue.

The use of nanovibration to discover specific and potent bioactive metabolites that stimulate osteogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells

Tom Hodgkinson et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of nanovibrational stimulation to induce osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells without the need for exogenous growth factors. By identifying specific bioactive metabolites through this method, such as cholesterol sulfate and fludrocortisone acetate, the researchers were able to optimize metabolite potency by examining structure-function relationships with cytoskeletal contractility and cell stiffness as measures.
