Caenorhabditis elegans as a powerful tool in natural product bioactivity research

Ngoc Minh Ha et al.

Summary: Apart from synthetic and semisynthetic compounds, natural products are important sources of potential therapeutic lead compounds for various diseases. In vivo assays, particularly using Caenorhabditis elegans, provide valuable insights into the efficacy, adverse effects, and modes of action of these candidates. This review highlights commonly used techniques for screening the bioactivities of natural products, and explores recent studies on their applications in anti-aging, anti-neurodegeneration, anti-obesity, anti-infection, and gut health using the C. elegans model. Technological developments in instrumental analysis and emerging methods involving C. elegans are also discussed.

Bacterial Cellulose as a Versatile Biomaterial for Wound Dressing Application

Julia Didier Pedrosa de Amorim et al.

Summary: Chronic ulcers have a significant impact on public health resources due to the high risk of infection and sepsis. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has broad applications in the medical field, especially for the treatment of skin diseases. BC membranes as temporary dressings reduce pain and accelerate epithelial regeneration, while BC-based composites and blends create an ideal microenvironment for wound healing.

Combination of Poly(ε-Caprolactone) Biomaterials and Essential Oils to Achieve Anti-Bacterial and Osteo-Proliferative Properties for 3D-Scaffolds in Regenerative Medicine

Sara Comini et al.

Summary: This study aimed to combine the antibacterial properties of essential oils with poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) polymer for medical applications. The results showed that PCL scaffolds enriched with essential oils were able to inhibit bacterial adhesion and reduce the presence of both adherent and planktonic bacteria. Furthermore, the essential oil-added PCL scaffolds did not have cytotoxic effects on cells.

Multimodal Antibacterial Platform Constructed by the Schottky Junction of Curcumin-Based Bio Metal-Organic Frameworks and Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanosheets for Efficient Wound Healing

Chuanpan Guo et al.

Summary: A novel multimodal antibacterial platform is constructed by growing a bioactive zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. The resulting interface between Zn-MOF and Ti3C2Tx NSs forms an oxygen vacancy-rich Schottky junction, enhancing the separation and electron transfer efficiency of photoinduced carriers. The platform shows excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial ability, making it suitable for bacteria-infected wound healing.
