Benthic Biofilm Bacterial Communities and Their Linkage with Water-Soluble Organic Matter in Effluent Receivers

Longfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of effluent discharge on bacterial communities and water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in benthic biofilms. The results showed significant changes in bacterial communities and WSOM characteristics in the discharge area, while the changes were smaller in biofilms collected upstream and downstream from the wastewater treatment plant. Although effluent discharge simplified the network pattern of the biofilm bacterial community, its metabolic functional abundance remained stable. The study highlights the important ecological role of carbon metabolism in effluent-receiving rivers.

Molecular characterization of nitrogen-containing organic compounds in fractionated atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) and its relationship with optical properties

Chenghao Wu et al.

Summary: Diverse nitrogen-containing organics in the atmosphere, known as humic-like substances (HULIS), were analyzed in this study. The organic components were separated using successive solvent fractionation and analyzed using mass spectrometric and optical instruments. The different polar fractions showed variations in molecular descriptors and optical properties. The combination of molecular descriptors and optical parameters improved the statistical analysis of multidimensional data. Different molecular characteristics were found to contribute to the light absorption and fluorescence properties in the various polar fractions. This study provides insights into the pretreatment method for exploring light-absorbing organics and the emission sources of organics related to specific optical properties.

Measurement report: Investigation of pH- and particle-size-dependent chemical and optical properties of water-soluble organic carbon: implications for its sources and aging processes

Yuanyuan Qin et al.

Summary: Knowledge of the chemical structures and optical properties of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) is critical for understanding its impact on aerosol-associated chemical reactions and climate radiative forcing. This study investigates the effects of pH and particle size on the chemical structure and optical properties of WSOC, as well as the aging process. The results show that WSOC in smaller particles has higher aromaticity and molecular weight, while WSOC in larger particles undergoes degradation during aging. Carboxylic groups are enriched in larger particles, while phenolic groups are more dominant in smaller particles. The fluorescence peak position suggests that hydroxyl groups play a leading role in pH-responsive fluorescence in summer, while carboxylic and nitro groups dominate in winter. Overall, smaller particles show a more pronounced pH dependence, which is related to the higher content of aromatic species in WSOC. The findings provide insights into the structure, source, and aging of WSOC, improving the accuracy of assessing its climate effects.

Measurement report: Particle-size-dependent fluorescence properties of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) and their atmospheric implications for the aging of WSOCs

Juanjuan Qin et al.

Summary: Water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) play important roles in the formation, migration, and transformation of atmospheric particles. The optical properties of WSOCs were investigated using three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, providing information about their atmospheric sources. WSOC concentrations and fluorescence intensity showed different distributions in winter and summer, with the dominant size range being 0.26-0.44 μm in both seasons. The fluorescence spectra of WSOCs varied with particle size due to changing sources and/or chemical transformation. The humification degree and pi-conjugated systems of WSOCs were highest in the particle size range of 0.26-0.44 μm. Humic-like substances were abundant in fine particles (< 1 μm) and peaked at 0.26-0.44 μm. Overall, the analysis of three-dimensional fluorescence data can effectively reveal the secondary transformation processes of WSOCs.

pH-Responsive Fluorescence EEM to Titrate the Interaction between Fluorophores and Acid/Base Groups in Water-Soluble Organic Compounds of PM2.5

Yuanyuan Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical interaction between fluorophores and acid/base functional groups in water-soluble organic compounds in particulate matter, and found that pH significantly affects the fluorescence characteristics of WSOC. Summer WSOC showed higher susceptibility to pH change compared to winter WSOC, possibly due to secondary formation/reactions of aerosols in summer. The findings suggest that the pH-responsive features of EEM fluorescence may have profound impacts on atmospheric photochemical processes.

Effect of ozone aging on light absorption and fluorescence of brown carbon in soot particles: The important role of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Yu Kuang et al.

Summary: The evolution of brown carbon (BrC) during atmospheric aging, including changes in optical properties and chemical compositions, was investigated by systematically measuring light absorption and fluorescence of BrC fraction extracted from fresh and ozonized propane soot particles by methanol. The study found that ozone aging led to a decrease in mass absorption efficiencies and a blue shift in fluorescence emission peaks, with the main chromophores being humic-like substances, charge transfer complexes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-like substances. The loss of PAH and decline in surface C-C content contributed more to changes in optical properties than oxygenated PAH formation, ultimately leading to a decrease in light absorption and fluorescence during O3 aging.
