Production of n-caproate using food waste through thermophilic fermentation without addition of external electron donors

Yanyan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the production of n-caproate from food waste without external electron donors through batch and semi-continuous fermentation. Microbial community analysis revealed key genera related to n-caproate production. Additionally, n-butyrate dominated the products with certain bacteria committed to its production.

Performance and Mechanism of Fe3O4 Improving Biotransformation of Waste Activated Sludge into Liquid High-Value Products

Tianyi Luo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Fe3O4 enhances the production and formation rate of medium-chain fatty acids and long-chain alcohols from waste activated sludge in anaerobic fermentation. Fe3O4 also improves the degradation of waste activated sludge and promotes microbial activities involved in the bioprocesses. Mechanistically, Fe3O4 increases the conductivity of fermented sludge and facilitates electron transfer, leading to enhanced electron transfer efficiency.

Synergistic association between cytochrome bd-encoded Proteiniphilum and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging methanogens in microaerobic-anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass

Zhuoying Wu et al.

Summary: Intermittent microaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass at a high organic loading rate showed higher digestibility and better stability compared to strict anaerobic conditions. The study identified efficient cellulolytic facultative bacterium and methanogens as key players in maintaining the delicate balance under microaeration. Additionally, cytochrome bd oxidase and antioxidant enzymes were found to potentially improve digestibility and stability in intermittent microaerobic digestion.
