Reconstructing original design: Process planning for reverse engineering

Zhaohui Geng et al.

Summary: Reverse Engineering (RE) is a method used to extract geometric design information from physical products for reproduction or redesign. This article proposes an algorithm to generate the mean configuration and an optimization model to address planning questions in the RE process. Simulations and case studies are conducted to evaluate the methods' performance.

Iterative Least Square Optimization for the Weights of NURBS Curve

Tuo-Ran Wang et al.

Summary: NURBS curves are widely used for data points approximation, and their fitting accuracy can be improved by adjusting the weights. This paper proposes a weights iterative optimization method for NURBS curve fitting, which uses the geometric property of weights and applies the least square method to iteratively obtain the adjusting values. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and convergence of the method, showing that it achieves higher fitting accuracy than other iterative optimization methods while being robust to data noise and flexible for small-scale knots.

NURBS function closed-loop mapping trajectory planning of serial robotic plasma cladding for complex surface coatings

Zhaoqin Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes the concept of non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) function open-/closed-loop mapping and applies it to the trajectory planning of robotic plasma cladding. The interpolation of complex surfaces is achieved using different interpolation methods. The results show that this method is feasible and effective for the planning of complex surface coatings.

A novel NURBS surface approach to statistically monitor manufacturing processes with point cloud data

Lee J. Wells et al.

Summary: With the advancement of sensor and measurement technologies, there is a growing need to adapt and develop new Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques to effectively utilize new datasets. This paper proposes an approach for performing SPC using high-density point clouds, transforming them into NURBS surfaces and monitoring control parameters using a surface monitoring technique. Simulation results are used to evaluate the proposed approach under varying fault scenarios.

Mathematical Approach in Complex Surfaces Toolpaths

Florin Popister et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on developing efficient algorithms to reduce operations in order to obtain complex surface milling finishing toolpaths for three-axis NC machines in the reverse engineering process. Two algorithms were developed to generate milling toolpaths for freeform surfaces using ordered/unordered point clouds. The practical work validates the feasibility of obtaining milling toolpaths through point cloud data.

A case study on use of 3D scanning for reverse engineering and quality control

Robin H. Helle et al.

Summary: Reverse engineering is essential for acquiring lost or outdated design knowledge, with the techniques evolving to utilize 3D scanning technologies. While it is feasible to use 3D scanning for reverse engineering and production control, significant challenges remain, particularly in developing accurate surface reconstruction algorithms. Components with complex geometry like free-form surfaces are found to be most suitable for reverse engineering using 3D scanning.
