Confining enzymes in porous organic frameworks: from synthetic strategy and characterization to healthcare applications

Siming Huang et al.

Summary: Enzymes are highly efficient and specific catalysts that dictate various reactions in living cells. Porous organic frameworks, such as MOFs, COFs, and HOFs, have emerged as ideal supports for enzyme immobilization due to their high surface area, tailorable porosity, and versatile compositions. Encased within organic frameworks, enzymes exhibit enhanced stability and reusability, and their tailorable pores provide a gatekeeper-like effect for guest sieving, beneficial for mimicking intracellular biocatalysis. This immobilization technique brings new insight into next-generation enzyme materials and has huge potential in healthcare applications.

Bimetal Biomimetic Engineering UtilizingMetal-Organic Frameworks for SuperoxideDismutase Mimic

Tong Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, scientists successfully used a bimetal metal-organic framework (MOF-818) platform to mimic Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) and found that its SOD-like activity was higher compared to monometallic MOFs mimics. Additionally, they developed a colorimetric sensing platform based on MOF-818 for detecting phosphorylated peptides and proteins.

Spatially Organized Functional Bioreactors in Nanoscale Mesoporous MOFs for Cascade Scavenging of Intracellular ROS

Ke Li et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed Zr-based large-pore mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (mesoMOFs) to create artificial microenvironments with specific functionalities, mimicking multiple cascade biocatalytic processes in cells. The integration of large mesopores and functional microporous mesopore walls in a single nanoplatform allows efficient mass exchange between interconnected pore units of different sizes.

Cerium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals Interconnected by Carbon Nanotubes for Boosting Electrochemical Capacitor Performance

Cheng-Hui Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, nanocrystals of a cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF), Ce-MOF-808, are directly grown on the surface of carboxylic acid-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via a one-step solvothermal synthesis method. The Ce-MOF-CNT nanocomposites with different ratios are synthesized and characterized. It is found that while the pristine Ce-MOF shows electrochemical activity, its charge transport behavior is limited. The addition of redox-active Ce-MOF-808 nanocrystals significantly enhances the capacitive performance of CNTs in aqueous-based supercapacitors.

Nanozymes Inspired by Natural Enzymes

Ruofei Zhang et al.

Summary: Nanozymes, nanomaterials with enzyme-like activities, have attracted significant attention in recent years as potential substitutes and competitors for natural enzymes. The key focus in this field is on creating nanozymes with catalytic performance comparable to or surpassing that of natural enzymes. By employing a bioinspired strategy, researchers have successfully synthesized high-activity nanozymes that show similar catalytic activities to natural enzymes, establishing a new hot topic in nanozyme research.
