Cloud adjustments from large-scale smoke-circulation interactions strongly modulate the southeastern Atlantic stratocumulus-to-cumulus transition

Michael S. Diamond et al.

Summary: Smoke from southern Africa affects the transition between stratocumulus and cumulus clouds, producing aerosol radiative effects that are crucial for understanding cloud evolution.

Biomass burning and marine aerosol processing over the southeast Atlantic Ocean: a TEM single-particle analysis

Caroline Dang et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the composition of single-particle aerosols collected during the ORACLES and CLARIFY-2017 campaigns. The study focuses on aged biomass burning aerosol and its interaction with the marine boundary layer, as well as the influence of biomass burning air on marine aerosol. The results suggest that atmospheric processes such as photolysis, oxidation, and cloud processing play a key role in the composition and morphology of aged biomass burning aerosols.

Factors affecting precipitation formation and precipitation susceptibility of marine stratocumulus with variable above- and below-cloud aerosol concentrations over the Southeast Atlantic

Siddhant Gupta et al.

Summary: Aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions (ACIs) contribute to uncertainties in climate models. Observations from the ORACLES field campaign showed that contact between biomass burning aerosols and marine stratocumulus resulted in precipitation suppression and reduced precipitation susceptibility. Different aerosol concentrations also influenced cloud microphysical properties.

Undersizing of aged African biomass burning aerosol by an ultra-high-sensitivity aerosol spectrometer

Steven G. Howell et al.

Summary: The UHSAS detected underestimated aerosol particles in biomass burning plumes during the NASA ORACLES project, which may be due to black carbon particles in the smoke heating to their vaporization point and shrinking. Laboratory calibrations confirm that black carbon particles are significantly undersized by the UHSAS.

Observations of supermicron-sized aerosols originating from biomass burning in southern Central Africa

Rose M. Miller et al.

Summary: The ORACLES project conducted over 3 years revealed the presence of supermicron-sized aerosol particles derived from biomass burning outside of clouds in the southeastern Atlantic region, mainly consisting of black carbon aerosol, ash, or unburned plant material. Measurements like back trajectories and elemental tracers suggest that these aerosol particles originate from biomass burning activities, particularly in northern Angola as indicated by HYSPLIT back trajectories and FIRMS MODIS fire maps.

Exploring the elevated water vapor signal associated with the free tropospheric biomass burning plume over the southeast Atlantic Ocean

Kristina Pistone et al.

Summary: Agricultural fires in southern Africa produce substantial biomass burning emissions, which affect the aerosol effects over the southeast Atlantic Ocean. There is a strong linear correlation between pollution indicators and atmospheric water vapor content, originating from a humid, smoky continental source region. This relationship is traced back to the mixing of smoky, moist continental boundary layer with clean, dry upper-troposphere air and the strong zonal winds transporting the plumes over the southeast Atlantic Ocean.

Sizing response of the Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS) and Laser Aerosol Spectrometer (LAS) to changes in submicron aerosol composition and refractive index

Richard H. Moore et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the sensitivity of two commercially available, high-resolution optical particle sizers to changes in aerosol composition and complex refractive index. By challenging the instruments with laboratory-generated aerosols of known chemical composition, the researchers aim to quantify the changes in the optical size response relative to specific aerosol types.

Rapid transformation of ambient absorbing aerosols from West African biomass burning

Huihui Wu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the evolution of smoke aerosols emitted from biomass burning in West Africa, particularly in the Senegal region. The research reveals that the aerosols, rich in black carbon emissions, undergo significant changes in their chemical and optical properties during transport. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of secondary processing in the production of brown carbon in the region, with implications for regional radiative forcing models.

Impact of the variability in vertical separation between biomass burning aerosols and marine stratocumulus on cloud microphysical properties over the Southeast Atlantic

Siddhant Gupta et al.

Summary: The properties of marine stratocumulus clouds over the Southeast Atlantic Ocean are affected by the interaction between above-cloud biomass burning aerosols and cloud tops. Research flights during the NASA ORACLES field campaign in September 2016 observed different vertical separations between the aerosol layer and cloud tops, with implications on cloud droplet concentration, effective radius, liquid water content, and free-tropospheric humidity. Contact profiles, where aerosol layers were within 100m of cloud tops, showed higher cloud droplet concentration and lower effective radius compared to separated profiles. Additionally, the presence of biomass burning aerosols near cloud tops led to changes in droplet evaporation and droplet nucleation which could impact precipitation rates and cloud transitions.

Photoacoustic studies of energy transfer from ozone photoproducts to bath gases following Chappuis band photoexcitation

Michael I. Cotterell et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the accurate characterization of microphone response functions dependencies on pressure using a speaker transducer, to explore the variations in photoacoustic response amplitudes and phase shifts with static pressure and bath gas composition. By developing and fitting a photochemical relaxation model based on experimental measurements, the study aimed to fully assess the accuracy of PAS calibrations using O-3-laden gas samples, considering sample pressure, bath gas composition, and PAS laser modulation frequency.

Empirically derived parameterizations of the direct aerosol radiative effect based on ORACLES aircraft observations

Sabrina P. Cochrane et al.

Summary: This paper uses observations from the NASA ORACLES aircraft campaign to develop a framework with two parameterizations that establish regionally representative relationships between aerosol-cloud properties and their radiative effects. The framework allows entire campaigns to be generalized into a set of parameterizations, linking the broadband DARE to the mid-visible aerosol optical depth and albedo by way of parameterizations. The parameterizations implicitly account for the underlying spectral dependencies of its drivers and circumvent some assumptions made when calculating DARE from satellite products or in a modeling context.

Summary: The representations of clouds, aerosols, and cloud-aerosol-radiation impacts are key uncertainties in climate change. The southeast Atlantic region is optimal for studying aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions, but existing satellite observations lack the necessary resolution for detailed assessment. The CLARIFY-2017 program aims to improve model estimates, cloud properties, satellite retrievals, and the impacts of aerosols in weather and climate models.
