Classical Simulation and Theory of Quantum Annealing in a Thermal Environment

Hiroki Oshiyama et al.

Summary: This study focuses on quantum annealing in the quantum Ising model coupled to a thermal environment. The system evolves following the instantaneous thermal equilibrium when the quantum annealing speed is sufficiently slow, but fails near the end of annealing. The authors propose a phenomenological theory based on this phenomenon, which is numerically confirmed using a novel non-Markovian method.

Comparing Relaxation Mechanisms in Quantum and Classical Transverse-Field Annealing

Tameem Albash et al.

Summary: Annealing schedule control allows for a better understanding of how putative quantum annealers operate, with the possibility to probe dissipative dynamics and thermal relaxation rates by modifying the annealing schedule. Experiments, simulations, and comparisons show that the increase in success probability when pausing is not uniquely quantum, and that relaxation in the system is dominated by a single timescale. Further exploration in simulation on the role of temperature during pausing helps distinguish between quantum and classical models of quantum annealers.

The emergence of electroweak Skyrmions through Higgs bosons

Juan Carlos Criado et al.

Summary: Skyrmions are extended field configurations used to describe baryons as topological solitons in an effective field theory of mesons. In this study, the existence of electroweak skyrmions within the Standard Model is confirmed, and their properties are investigated by considering interactions with the Higgs field and the Skyrme term. Dimension-8 operators that stabilize the electroweak skyrmion as a spatially localized soliton field configuration with finite size are identified, with their energy and radius calculated using a neural network method. Skyrmions in the electroweak sector are found to be non-topological solitons with long lifetimes, making them potential candidates for dark matter.

Exploring instantons in nonlinear sigma models with spin-lattice systems

Sebastian Schenk et al.

Summary: Instanton processes are studied using Monte Carlo methods on lattices of interacting spins to address the elusive features of these processes in quantum field theories. Instanton solutions in O(3) nonlinear sigma models with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in (1 + 1) and (1 + 2) dimensions are systematically constructed, demonstrating the suitability of Monte Carlo techniques in describing topologically nontrivial field configurations in these theories. Simulated annealing is used to obtain domain walls, merons, and critical instanton solutions.
