Sludge-based activated carbon and its application in the removal of perfluoroalkyl substances: A feasible approach towards a circular economy

Badr A. Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility of recovering resources and energy from sewage sludge through the production of sludge-based activated carbon (SBAC) based on circular economy principles. The results show that SBAC is an effective sorbent for removing various contaminants, and it can be produced at a lower cost compared to commercial activated carbon.

Biosolids-based activated carbon for enhanced copper removal from citric-acid-rich aqueous media

Nina Ricci Nicomel et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of citric acid on the removal of Cu(II) by seven biosolids-based adsorbents were assessed. The results showed that only SBAC exhibited an increased Cu(II) removal efficiency in the presence of citric acid. Further investigation revealed that SBAC could effectively adsorb Cu(II) and reduce it to levels below the discharge limit.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the environment, waste management, and energy sectors: a deeper look into the long-term impacts

Badr A. Mohamed et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had short-term improvements in air quality, but the negative long-term consequences outweigh the positive impacts. The lockdown led to a significant reduction in pollutants in the air, but it also strained waste management systems and increased pollution from face masks and sanitizers.

Co-pyrolysis of biosolids with alum sludge: Effect of temperature and mixing ratio on product properties

Nimesha Rathnayake et al.

Summary: With the rapid growth of biosolids and alum sludge production due to increasing urbanization, sustainable management of these waste materials is becoming more important. Pyrolysis has been identified as a promising method for biosolids management, but the land application of biochar derived from this method may be limited due to the potential increase in heavy metal concentration. This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of biosolids with alum sludge to produce high-quality biochar with reduced heavy metal content. The results showed that co-pyrolysis can effectively reduce heavy metal concentrations in biochar and improve the quality of oil and gas products, suggesting beneficial synergistic effects. The process parameters, such as pyrolysis temperature and alum sludge mixing ratio, also have a significant impact on yield distribution and product properties.

Adsorption of p-benzoquinone at low concentrations from aqueous media using biosolid-based activated carbon

Nina Ricci Nicomel et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorptive removal of p-benzoquinone by a biosolid-based activated carbon was investigated, and it was found that the adsorption rate was rapid and the maximum adsorption capacity was high. The biosolid-based activated carbon could effectively lower the residual p-benzoquinone to below the fish-toxicity limit within 1 hour. Therefore, it is a promising method for the removal of p-benzoquinone from aqueous environments.

Summary: This study develops a life cycle assessment model to evaluate the environmental and economic impact of four common sewage sludge treatment methods in the North American context. The findings suggest that pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion coupled with agricultural land application have lower global warming impact, while composting and pyrolysis have lower life cycle costs compared to alternative treatments.
