Impact of Bubbles on Electrochemically Active Surface Area of Microtextured Gas-Evolving Electrodes

Jack R. Lake et al.

Summary: This study investigates how electrochemical bubbles dynamically alter the electrochemically active surface area during bubble evolution. The researchers discover that the most densely microtextured electrodes have the lowest performance due to the inactivation induced by bubbles growing within the denser microtexture. Furthermore, the study shows that the area beneath adhered bubbles is electrochemically active, contrary to currently held assumptions.

A pair of adjacent bubbles evolution at micro-electrode under electrode-normal magnetic field

Qian Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of Lorentz force on the growth, coalescence, and detachment of adjacent hydrogen bubbles. The results show that the MMHD convection induced by Lorentz force can delay bubble coalescence and decrease bubble growth rate. Computational fluid dynamics reveal the presence of MMHD convection around the bubbles, creating lower pressure areas that hinder bubble coalescence.

A model of the growth of hydrogen bubbles in the electrolysis of water

F. J. Higuera

Summary: The growth of attached bubbles during the electrochemical evolution of hydrogen on a horizontal cathode in a dilute aqueous solution is analyzed. Factors such as spacing between bubbles, voltage applied, and dissolved hydrogen concentration affect bubble growth, which follows a t(1/2) law with larger spacing and approaches t(1/3) law with smaller spacing. The presence of attached bubbles increases the average current density due to a decrease in concentration overpotential caused by the bubbles.

Competing Marangoni effects form a stagnant cap on the interface of a hydrogen bubble attached to a microelectrode

A. M. Meulenbroek et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the formation of a stagnant cap on a bubble attached to a microelectrode, with numerical simulations incorporating both thermo- and solutocapillary effects. By assuming a stagnant cap of surfactants on the top of the bubble, better predictions for experimentally observed Marangoni convection can be made. The research explores the mechanisms behind the stagnant cap formation utilizing two different methods, providing evidence to support the hypothesis.

Experimental investigation on bubble growth and detachment characteristics on vertical microelectrode surface under electrode-normal magnetic field in water electrolysis

Shuiqing Zhan et al.

Summary: The effects of current density and electrode-normal magnetic fields on the growth and detachment characteristics of a single bubble on vertical microelectrode surface have been investigated. The results reveal that bubble coalescence behavior occurs at low current densities and can be gradually inhibited with increasing current density; external magnetic fields promote the bubble detachment behavior within a relatively large current density range.

Periodic bouncing of a plasmonic bubble in a binary liquid by competing solutal and thermal Marangoni forces

Binglin Zeng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the nucleation and evolution of plasmonic bubbles in a binary liquid, finding that the bubbles are periodically attracted to and repelled from the substrate, with frequencies around a few kilohertz. The competition between solutal and thermal Marangoni forces is identified as the origin of this periodic bouncing phenomenon. The dependence of the bouncing frequency on control parameters such as ethanol fraction and laser power for plasmonic heating is studied.

Dynamics of single hydrogen bubbles at Pt microelectrodes in microgravity

Aleksandr Bashkatov et al.

Summary: The dynamics of single hydrogen bubbles electrogenerated in acidic electrolytes at a Pt microelectrode under potentiostatic conditions in microgravity during parabolic flights were investigated. Three bubble evolution scenarios were identified, with a focus on the dominant scenario characterized by lateral detachment of grown bubbles. Comprehensive analysis was conducted on the evolution of bubble radius, electric current, bubble trajectories, and lifetime for different potentials and electrolyte concentrations, as well as bubble-bubble coalescence events. A detailed comparison of characteristic bubble phenomena at various levels of gravity was also explored, including hypergravity conditions permitted during parabolic flights.
