Association of Habitual Alcohol Intake With Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Kiran J. Biddinger et al.

Summary: Observational studies have suggested cardiovascular benefits associated with light alcohol consumption, while genetic analyses have indicated a possible causal link between alcohol intake and increased cardiovascular disease risk. This cohort study using the UK Biobank examined the association of habitual alcohol intake with cardiovascular disease risk, showing that light to moderate alcohol consumption was associated with healthier lifestyle factors, but genetic predisposition to alcohol intake was associated with increased risk of hypertension and coronary artery disease across different levels of intake.

Causal associations of alcohol consumption with cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality among Chinese males

Chunyu Hu et al.

Summary: This study finds a causal relationship between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and all-cause mortality in Chinese males. Light and moderate drinking can reduce the risk of CVDs and all-cause mortality. However, genetically predicted alcohol consumption shows a linear association with CVDs.

Resveratrol and cardiovascular system-the unfulfilled hopes

Malgorzata Chudzinska et al.

Summary: Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound, has shown a wide range of health-promoting effects on the cardiovascular system due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet, and anticoagulant activities. Despite numerous articles and clinical studies, the convincing beneficial mechanisms and effects of resveratrol on cardiovascular diseases have not been clearly confirmed in humans. Further randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are needed to objectively confirm the potential health-promoting effects of resveratrol and determine its efficacy, safety, and therapeutic potential.

Alcohol's Impact on the Cardiovascular System

Michael Roerecke

Summary: Alcohol consumption has complex relationships with cardiovascular diseases, with conflicting associations depending on exposure measurement and outcomes. Methodological shortcomings and the need for large-scale longitudinal studies with detailed exposure and outcome measurements are highlighted. The less alcohol consumed, the better for individuals' cardiovascular health.
