Spinal interneurons of the lower urinary tract circuits

Sergei Karnup

Summary: This article reviews the coordination of muscles involved in urine storage and elimination, focusing on the role of spinal interneurons and circuits in this process. It also discusses the impacts of sexual dimorphism, developmental features, and spinal cord injuries on urinary function. Furthermore, the proposed intraspinal mechanism for external urethral sphincter bursting in rats and mice is explored.

Summary: Nintedanib improves bladder dysfunction and fibrosis in SCI mice, while also reducing expression of C-fiber afferent markers, suggesting modulation of bladder C-fiber afferent activity to improve detrusor overactivity (DO).

Functional roles for PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 in urothelial mechanotransduction and lower urinary tract interoception

Summary: The study reveals that the urothelium functions in a sex- and circadian rhythm-dependent manner to link urothelial PIEZO1/2 channel-driven mechanotransduction to normal voiding function and behavior. In the absence of these signals, bladder dysfunction occurs.

Time-dependent progression of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction after spinal cord injury in the mouse model

Tetsuichi Saito et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the time-course changes in bladder dysfunction associated with mechanosensitive channels in a mouse model of spinal cord injury. The results suggest that detrusor overactivity is established early, detrusor sphincter dyssynergia is completed later with an improvement at 6 weeks post-SCI, and mechanosensitive channels may be involved in the time-dependent changes in bladder function.
