New insight into the negative impact of imidazolium-based ionic liquid [C10mim]Cl on Hela cells: From membrane damage to biochemical alterations

Summary: This study evaluated the cytotoxicity of [C(10)mim]Cl and elucidated its main toxic mechanism in human cervical carcinoma cells, revealing that it can damage cellular membrane structure, affect cell ultrastructure and cause oxidative damage leading to inhibition of cell proliferation. The findings demonstrate that membrane structure is the key target, and membrane damage is involved in [C(10)mim]Cl induced cytotoxicity.

Characterization of ionic liquid cytotoxicity mechanisms in human keratinocytes compared with conventional biocides

Summary: The study found that ILs with longer alkyl chains exhibited greater biocidal activity at relevant concentrations, comparable to commonly used biocides. The primary cytotoxic mechanism was determined to be necrosis, with apoptosis observed at lower concentrations. The modification of anion significantly affected cytotoxicity, indicating that cytotoxicity may be a tuneable property when using ILs as biocides.

Effects of ionic liquid [N4444] AOT on rice seedling growth cytomembrane damage and rhizobacteria resistance

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) composed of ions with a large asymmetric cation and an anion have been widely used but are found to have toxic effects on rice seedlings. The study showed that the new functional IL [N-4444] AOT negatively impacted rice seedlings with increasing concentration, while rhizobacteria demonstrated strong resistance to IL [N-4444] AOT and even promoted growth. This indicates the potential for rhizobacteria to easily degrade IL [N-4444] AOT and mitigate the ecological risks associated with ILs.
