Transcranial Sonography of the Substantia Nigra for the Differential Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders: A Meta-Analysis

Yan-Liang Mei et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis revealed that hyperechogenicity of the substantia nigra has a sensitivity and specificity of 0.85 and 0.71, respectively, in distinguishing idiopathic Parkinson's disease from other movement disorders, with an area under the curve of 0.94 on the summary receiver operating characteristic. Transcranial sonography of the substantia nigra is a valuable tool for the differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.

Neurosonological Findings Related to Non-Motor Features of Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review

Cristina del Toro Perez et al.

Summary: Literature research demonstrates that brainstem raphe hypoechogenicity is related to depression in both PD and non-PD patients, as well as overactive bladder. Substantia nigra hyperechogenicity is common in patients with visual hallucinations, and larger intracranial ventricles are correlated with dementia. The evaluation of the vagus nerve shows contradictory findings.
