Folliculin-interacting protein FNIP2 impacts on overweight and obesity through a polymorphism in a conserved 3′ untranslated region

Lara P. Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study identified a SNP, rs2291007, in the conserved region of the 3'UTR of the FNIP2 gene that is associated with multiple leanness parameters. The SNP affects FNIP2 mRNA levels and leads to decreased adiposity and increased leanness in both human volunteers and mice. FNIP2 expression is an important contributor to body mass index prediction.

Global pandemics interconnected - obesity, impaired metabolic health and COVID-19

Norbert Stefan et al.

Summary: Obesity and impaired metabolic health are established risk factors for NCDs such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and MAFLD, and have been linked to an increased risk of severe COVID-19. Specifically, visceral obesity and characteristics of impaired metabolic health are associated with a high risk of severe COVID-19.

Use of human PBMC to analyse the impact of obesity on lipid metabolism and metabolic status: a proof-of-concept pilot study

Andrea Costa et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of overweight/obesity on lipid metabolism by analyzing gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Results showed that PBMC can reflect the gene expression profile of internal tissues, highlighting the association between obesity-related alterations in lipid metabolism and metabolic risk. Further research is needed to understand the potential of PBMC in analyzing metabolic recovery in weight management programs.

The mTOR-Autophagy Axis and the Control of Metabolism

Nerea Deleyto-Seldas et al.

Summary: mTOR is a master regulator of cellular metabolism, existing in two distinct complexes. mTORC1 plays a key role in cell growth and biomass establishment, while mTORC2 is closely related to mTORC1. mTOR inhibits autophagy through multiple mechanisms, including the inhibition of early autophagic processes and the control of lysosomal degradative capacity.
