Effect of in-situ emulsification of surfactant on the enhanced oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs

Xiaoxiao Li et al.

Summary: Surfactant flooding technology has become an important method for enhancing oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs. This study compared the behaviors of surfactants, including reducing interfacial tension and in-situ emulsification, and used a 2D heterogeneous model to examine their effects. The results showed that in-situ emulsification was more crucial for oil recovery, especially in cores with lower permeability. The strong emulsifying capacity of surfactant dispersed residual oil, blocked pores, and improved efficiency, while avoiding the formation of micro water channels.

Controllable regulation of emulsion stability by a pH-responsive zwitterionic/anionic surfactant system

Hairong Wu et al.

Summary: A pH-responsive zwitterionic/anionic surfactant system was proposed to improve crude oil recovery and achieve rapid demulsification of produced fluid. By adjusting the pH value, the interaction between surfactants could be controlled, allowing effective modulation of emulsification and demulsification states. The study demonstrated that varying the molar ratio of EAB to SDS and pH values could significantly impact the stability and droplet size of the emulsion.

Flotation performance of a novel Gemini collector for kaolinite at low temperature

Shiyong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduced a novel amino-based Gemini surfactant BBDB as a collector for kaolinite flotation, which showed better performance than the common monomolecular surfactant DDA at low temperature. The tests results indicated that BBDB could significantly improve the hydrophobicity of the kaolinite surface and achieve higher kaolinite recovery rates compared to DDA.

Effects of zwitterionic surfactant adsorption on the component distribution in the crude oil droplet: A molecular simulation study

Peng Lian et al.

Summary: The molecular interactions between various components in crude oil and the zwitterionic surfactant DDPS were investigated using MD simulation and quantum chemistry calculations. DDPS molecules can form an organized adsorption layer at the crude oil surface, leading to the movement of components in both the hydrophobic interior and interfacial layer of crude oil droplets. Complex interactions (hydrophobic, electrostatic, and cationic) between DDPS molecules and components are responsible for the final distribution and configuration in the crude oil/water/DDPS system.

Stabilization mechanism and chemical demulsification of water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions in petroleum industry: A review

Duo Wang et al.

Summary: Emulsions frequently encountered in petroleum production pose technical challenges and increase costs. Chemical treatment with demulsifiers plays a vital role in destabilizing the complex emulsions, but developing effective and cost-efficient demulsifiers remains challenging. This review systematically examines the stabilization mechanisms of emulsions and categorizes demulsifiers for water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions, providing insights into efficient demulsification methods.
