Dispersion of Love-type wave and its limitation in a nonlocal elastic model of nonhomogeneous layer upon an orthotropic extended medium

Santanu Manna et al.

Summary: This research paper investigates the dispersion of Love-type surface waves in a nonlocal elastic nonhomogeneous medium over a nonlocal orthotropic semi-infinite medium, taking into account the effect of interior initial stress component. The study adopts a generalized linear elasticity theory with the nonlocal effect to address the equation of motion in layered media. The dispersion of Love-type wave and its limitation in a nonlocal elastic medium are analyzed graphically using MATLAB software. The results show that the attenuation of the dispersion depends on a nonlocal parameter, and the wave becomes nondispersive with zero attenuation for large values of the nonlocal parameter. The variation of the phase velocity for different parameters is also shown graphically.

Flexural Edge Waves in a Thick Piezoelectric Film Resting on a Winkler Foundation

Saad Althobaiti et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the propagation characteristics of bending edge waves in a thick piezoelectric film, taking into account the electromechanical coupling. The problem is analyzed analytically and numerically using harmonic wave propagation. The results show that an increase in voltage leads to a decrease in critical velocity, while an increase in the Winkler's constant leads to an increase in critical velocity.

Love-type surface wave propagation due to interior impulsive point source in a homogeneous-coated anisotropic poroelastic layer over a non-homogeneous extended substance

Santanu Manna et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of an impulsive point source on the Love-type surface wave propagation in an anisotropic poroelastic medium with a thin isotropic homogeneous layer over an infinitely extended anisotropic non-homogeneous substance. The closed-form equation of motion and dispersion relation are derived using the Green's function approach. Attenuation analysis and numerical error analysis are conducted, and the validity of the theoretical predictions is confirmed through specific cases and numerical simulations. MATLAB software is used to numerically illustrate the phase and group velocities, and a short movie is created to visualize the changes in wave amplitude with porosity. The derivation and analysis of the structural model hold promising applications in seismology and civil engineering, particularly in the study of earthquakes and mechanical explosions on the near-surface of the Earth.

Wave propagation in an elastic coaxial hollow cylinder when exposed to thermal heating and external load

Saad Althobaiti et al.

Summary: This manuscript examines the propagation of waves in a coaxial hollow infinite isotropic cylinder when exposed to a thermal heating source from the outer cylinder. For the mechanical conditions, the inner and outer cylinders are assumed to be displacement-free, in addition to a perfectly welded interface; while an insulation thermal condition is assumed on the interface to prevent the inner cylinder from being heated by an already heated outer cylinder. Equally, a situation of an external load on the outer cylinder is also examined. As for the methodology, a mixture of the normal mode analysis method and the numerical Laplace integral transform is employed to study the vibrational displacements in the inner and outer cylinders, as well as the temperature field in the outer cylinder. Lastly, certain graphical illustrations associated with low and higher heating periods are demonstrated after considering some physical data and heating sources of practical application.

Heat and wave interactions in a thermoelastic coaxial solid cylinder driven by laser heating sources

Ali M. Mubaraki et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactive nature of the wave and temperature field in an infinite thermoelastic coaxial solid cylinder. It is found that the presence of the absorption coefficient and laser power intensity in the laser heating source exponentially increases both the displacements and temperature fields, while the existence of more laser parameters serves as a controlling factor.

Effect of fractional temporal variation on the vibration of waves on elastic substrates with spatial non-homogeneity

Ahmed S. M. Alzaidi et al.

Summary: The current manuscript investigates the effect of fractional temporal variation on the vibration of waves on non-homogeneous elastic substrates using Laplace integral transform and asymptotic approach. Four different types of non-homogeneities, including linear and exponential forms, are considered and analyzed. The study concludes that fractional temporal variation significantly affects the vibrational fields, with vibrations increasing as the fractional-order mu decreases. Additionally, the two approaches used for cylindrical substrates show good agreement for very small non-homogeneity parameter a.

Analysis of reflection and transmission phenomenon at distinct bonding interfaces in a rotating pre-stressed functionally graded piezoelectric-orthotropic structure

Mukesh Kumar Pal et al.

Summary: This mathematical study examines the reflection and transmission phenomenon of a plane wave in a rotating pre-stressed structure with distinct types of separating interfaces. The effects of pre-stresses, rotation, and functional gradients, along with different types of boundaries, on reflection and transmission coefficients are compared. The findings are validated through computation of energy-partitions and observation of the Law of conservation of energy, revealing some important peculiarities.

Antiplane shear of an asymmetric sandwich plate

Julius Kaplunov et al.

Summary: The study discusses an asymmetric three-layered laminate with prescribed stresses, focusing on long-wave low-frequency anti-plane shear. The asymptotic analysis reveals a low-frequency harmonic supporting slow quasi-static decay and near cut-off wave propagation. Despite the asymmetry, the leading order shortened polynomial dispersion relation factorizes into simpler ones corresponding to the fundamental mode and the harmonic. The derived 1D equations of motion are split into two second-order operators in line with the factorization of the shortened dispersion relation, and asymptotically justified boundary conditions are established considering the high-contrast properties of the laminate.
