Modeled and observed properties related to the direct aerosol radiative effect of biomass burning aerosol over the southeastern Atlantic

Sarah J. Doherty et al.

Summary: In this study, four models were compared with observations of biomass burning smoke plume and underlying cloud layer. The models showed biases in simulating the plume characteristics, with overestimation of vertical diffusion and underestimation of plume concentrations. Cloud fraction and optical thickness biases varied significantly across the models. The study demonstrated that model improvements in one property may lead to even greater biases in the direct aerosol radiative effect (DARE).

Biomass burning aerosol heating rates from the ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) 2016 and 2017 experiments

Sabrina P. Cochrane et al.

Summary: Aerosol heating from shortwave absorption has implications for local atmospheric stability and regional dynamics. Deriving heating rate profiles from space-based observations is challenging due to the need for vertical profiles of relevant properties. Additionally, the presence of stratocumulus clouds below biomass burning plumes further complicates the issue. However, combining spaceborne lidar data with passive imagers shows promise for future derivations. This study analyzes aircraft measurements in the southeastern Atlantic to derive heating rate profiles and explores the concept of heating rate efficiency (HRE), which allows for a better understanding of the relationship between aerosol properties and heating rates.

Climate models generally underrepresent the warming by Central Africa biomass-burning aerosols over the Southeast Atlantic

Marc Mallet et al.

Summary: Research shows that biomass-burning aerosols from Central Africa have a significant impact on cloud properties and precipitation over tropical Africa. However, most current climate models underestimate the absorption of these aerosols over the South-East Atlantic, leading to an inaccurate representation of radiative forcing and precipitation feedbacks in the region.

A meteorological overview of the ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) campaign over the southeastern Atlantic during 2016-2018: Part 1-Climatology

Ju-Mee Ryoo et al.

Summary: The ORACLES project conducted 3-month-long deployments in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean from 2016 to 2018 to study the impact of biomass burning aerosols on climate. The southern African easterly jet (AEJ-S) was a key feature during the deployment months of August 2017, September 2016, and October 2018. Notable meteorological anomalies were observed during these months compared to climatology, with differences in wind patterns, rainfall, and atmospheric circulation.

Sunlight-absorbing aerosol amplifies the seasonal cycle in low-cloud fraction over the southeast Atlantic

Jianhao Zhang et al.

Summary: The mean altitude of smoke loading over the southeast Atlantic shifts from the boundary layer to the free troposphere between July and October. Changes in cloud properties and the large-scale environment as a result of biomass burning aerosol loading are observed near Ascension Island during this period. In September, midlatitude disturbances can affect the aerosol distribution, while cleaner days with stronger boundary layer winds lead to deeper, drier, and cooler marine boundary layers compared to days with high smoke loadings.

Exploring the elevated water vapor signal associated with the free tropospheric biomass burning plume over the southeast Atlantic Ocean

Kristina Pistone et al.

Summary: Agricultural fires in southern Africa produce substantial biomass burning emissions, which affect the aerosol effects over the southeast Atlantic Ocean. There is a strong linear correlation between pollution indicators and atmospheric water vapor content, originating from a humid, smoky continental source region. This relationship is traced back to the mixing of smoky, moist continental boundary layer with clean, dry upper-troposphere air and the strong zonal winds transporting the plumes over the southeast Atlantic Ocean.

Summary: The representations of clouds, aerosols, and cloud-aerosol-radiation impacts are key uncertainties in climate change. The southeast Atlantic region is optimal for studying aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions, but existing satellite observations lack the necessary resolution for detailed assessment. The CLARIFY-2017 program aims to improve model estimates, cloud properties, satellite retrievals, and the impacts of aerosols in weather and climate models.
