Spatial Variation of Surface O3 Responses to Drought Over the Contiguous United States During Summertime: Role of Precursor Emissions and Ozone Chemistry

Wei Li et al.

Summary: Drought exacerbates ozone (O-3) air pollution, with varying effects in different regions. Higher ozone enhancement is observed in the Southeast, while the West shows no significant change or even a decrease. This study highlights the crucial role of biogenic isoprene in ozone chemistry under drought conditions.

Global Perspective of Drought Impacts on Ozone Pollution Episodes

Yadong Lei et al.

Summary: Ozone pollution threatens global public health and ecosystem productivity, and droughts modulate surface ozone through meteorological processes and vegetation feedback. Accelerated photochemical rates dominate surface ozone enhancement during droughts, except in eastern U.S. and western Europe where reduced stomatal uptakes make comparable contributions. Increased droughts offset 43% of the effects from air pollution control, highlighting the need for more stringent control of ozone precursors to mitigate the higher risks of ozone pollution episodes caused by droughts in a warming world.

Impact of Drought on Isoprene Fluxes Assessed Using Field Data, Satellite-Based GLEAM Soil Moisture and HCHO Observations from OMI

Beata Opacka et al.

Summary: Terrestrial vegetation emits biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which have significant impacts on the tropospheric oxidizing potential, air quality, and climate. This study finds that the current emission model fails to accurately represent the reduction in isoprene emissions during severe droughts. By updating the parameterization based on recent measurements, the study provides a better representation of isoprene emissions.

Strong isoprene emission response to temperature in tundra vegetation

Roger Seco et al.

Summary: Emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) play a crucial role in biosphere-atmosphere interactions. In northern latitudes, BVOCs have a recognized but poorly quantified role in amplifying climate change. Our study reveals that tundra vegetation could substantially increase its isoprene emissions in response to rising temperatures, at rates exceeding current Earth system model predictions.

Source and variability of formaldehyde (HCHO) at northern high latitudes: an integrated satellite, aircraft, and model study

Tianlang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variability and sources of summertime formaldehyde (HCHO) in Alaska using satellite observations, aircraft measurements, and a regional chemical transport model. The results suggest that background HCHO is the dominant contributor to HCHO column density, while wildfires and biogenic VOC emissions contribute less.

Summary: Research finds that drought enhances the tropospheric column concentrations of surface ozone precursors in the US, with the most significant increase in formaldehyde concentration observed in woody savannas of the Southeast, and the largest increase in nitrogen dioxide concentration over Midwest croplands and grasslands.

Formaldehyde evolution in US wildfire plumes during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality experiment (FIREX-AQ)

Jin Liao et al.

Summary: The study found that dilution-normalized HCHO increases in wildfire plumes are related to the physical aging of the plume, predominantly controlled by photolysis and OH-initiated VOC oxidation. The production and loss rates of HCHO, as well as the secondary HCHO production, decrease with plume age, with OH abundance being the main driver of variability in HCHO secondary production between fires. The effective HCHO yield per VOC molecule oxidized for the wildfires analyzed was determined to be 0.33 (+/- 0.05).

Investigation of near-global daytime boundary layer height using high-resolution radiosondes: first results and comparison with ERA5, MERRA-2, JRA-55, and NCEP-2 reanalyses

Jianping Guo et al.

Summary: This study establishes a near-global climatology of BLH using high-resolution radiosonde measurements and compares it with four reanalysis datasets. It finds significant spatial and temporal variations in daytime BLH, with ERA5 showing the most reliable underestimation compared to radiosonde measurements. Other reanalysis products may introduce additional uncertainties with larger underestimations.
