Integration of observed and model-derived groundwater levels in landslide threshold models in Rwanda

Judith Uwihirwe et al.

Summary: Incorporating regional hydrological characteristics in empirical statistical landslide threshold models has the potential to improve the quality of landslide predictions for early warning systems. This study tested the value of regional groundwater level information in improving regional landslide predictions using empirical models based on threshold levels. The findings suggest that single variable threshold models derived from groundwater levels exhibit the highest landslide prediction power.

Comparing methods for determining landslide early warning thresholds: potential use of non-triggering rainfall for locations with scarce landslide data availability

David J. Peres et al.

Summary: Thresholds for rainfall intensity-duration landslide-triggering can be determined through three types of rainfall event datasets: triggering, non-triggering, or both. Comparison of these methods based on statistical properties shows that using both triggering and non-triggering rainfall data is the most effective, providing a balance between correct predictions and robustness, though requiring a large sample size.

Historical dynamics of landslide risk from population and forest-cover changes in the Kivu Rift

Arthur Depicker et al.

Summary: Human activity influences the occurrence and impact of landslides in mountainous environments, particularly in the Kivu Rift region where landslide risk is higher. Factors such as population pressure, deforestation, and land-use changes contribute to this increased risk.

Summary: Deforestation leads to increased landslide activity in the short term, but the interaction of geological and geomorphological processes affects landslide erosion rates in the long term. Landslide erosion rates in deforested areas are significantly higher compared to forested terrains.
