Counterintuitive Electrostatics upon Metal Ion Coordination to a Receptor with Two Homotopic Binding Sites

Vidar Aspelin et al.

Summary: The consecutive binding of two potassium ions to BCETB in water was studied using experimental and simulation methods. A counterintuitive result was observed, with the enthalpy change associated with the binding of the second ion being more negative than that of the first ion. Further investigation revealed that the conformation of BCETB changes due to the coordination of potassium ions, which is related to the observed difference in enthalpy changes.

Weak bonding strategies for achieving regio- and site-selective transformations

Yang Jiao et al.

Summary: The ability to control the regio- and site-selectivities of chemical reactions using weak bonding interactions is a significant challenge in synthetic chemistry. Inspired by enzyme-catalyzed reactions, chemists have developed various strategies based on weak bonding interactions to achieve selective transformations on molecules without introducing additional functional groups.

Experimental and Computational Models for Side Chain Discrimination in Peptide-Protein Interactions

Anna Lidskog et al.

Summary: In this study, a model system involving a bis(18-crown-6) Troger's base receptor and 4-substituted hepta-1,7-diyl bisammonium salt ligands was used to investigate interactions between non-polar peptides side chains and a protein's aromatic cavity. Experimental results showed a preference for an all-anti conformation of the heptane chain in most ligands, with the substituent located inside or partially inside the aromatic cavity when bound to the receptor. Computational analysis revealed that molecular mechanics (MM) methods outperformed density functional theory (DFT) methods in estimating free binding energies.

A Donor-Acceptor [2]Catenane for Visible Light Photocatalysis

Yang Jiao et al.

Summary: This study enhances the charge-transfer interactions between donor and acceptor molecules through mechanical interlocking, leading to increased absorption of visible light and good catalytic activity. The [2]catenane demonstrated excellent performance in both photo-reductions and -oxidations, showing potential for solar energy conversion and development of active artificial molecular shuttles, switches, and machines.

Cyclic Diplatinum Complex with a Troger's Base Ligand and Reductive Elimination of a Highly Strained Ring Molecule

Yusuke Yoshigoe et al.

Summary: The reaction of Distannylated Troger's base with PtCl2(cod) yielded a mixture of macrocyclic diplatinum complex and oligomers, with reductive elimination observed when heated with excess PPh3, leading to a diastereoselective product. H-1 NMR and DFT studies showed a molecular structure with Troger's base units having smaller arylene rings compared to dimethyl Troger's base.
