Tri- and Tetra-superatomic Molecules in Ligand-Protected Face-Fused Icosahedral (M@Au12)n (M = Au, Pt, Ir, and Os, and n=3 and 4) Clusters

Chang Xu et al.

Summary: Cluster assembling is a hot topic in nanochemistry. This study theoretically predicts stable ligand-protected tri- and tetra-superatomic clusters and a gold nanowire, which have similar geometric and electronic structures to simple molecules.

Doping-Mediated Energy-Level Engineering of M@Au12 Superatoms (M=Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir) for Efficient Photoluminescence and Photocatalysis

Haru Hirai et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of MAu12(dppe)(5)Cl-2 compounds with icosahedral structures were synthesized and their electronic structures, photoluminescence, and photocatalytic properties were systematically investigated. Doping an M element at the lower left of the periodic table expanded the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO, resulting in enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield. MAu12 (M=Pt, Rh, or Ir) exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than Au-13.

Electron Affinities of Ligated Icosahedral M13 Superatoms Revisited Gas-Phase Anion Photoelectron

Shun Ito et al.

Summary: The electron binding energies of gold/silver-based clusters with M13 superatomic cores were reexamined using gas-phase photoelectron spectroscopy. The previous results were found to be contaminated by signals from two-photon electron detachment, but the effects of doping and ligation on electron binding energies were not significantly affected.

Asymmetrically Doping a Platinum Atom into a Au38 Nanocluster for Changing the Electron Configuration and Reactivity in Electrocatalysis

Xu Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, Pt atoms were successfully doped into Au nanoclusters, and it was found that asymmetrical doping of one Pt atom increased energy and led to the loss of one valence electron, while symmetrical doping of two Pt atoms narrowed the energy gap and reduced two valence electrons. The different combinations of these doped nanoclusters exhibited varying CO2 electroreduction activity.

Atomically Precise Au42 Nanorods with Longitudinal Excitons for an Intense Photothermal Effect

Yingwei Li et al.

Summary: This study reports a metal-precise rod-shaped Au42(SCH2Ph)32 with a high aspect ratio of the hexagonal-close-packed Au20 kernel, which exhibits intense longitudinal absorption and effective photothermal conversion at low concentrations. The findings demonstrate that Au42 nanorods inherit the longitudinal excitation similar to metallic-state nanorods. This work highlights the potential applications of Au42 nanorods in photothermal converters, biomedical therapy, photoacoustic imaging, and photocatalysis.

Summary: Targeted syntheses of MM ' Au-36(PET)(24) were achieved through hydride-mediated fusion reactions, resulting in bi-icosahedral MM ' Au-21 cores composed of M@Au-12 and M '@Au-12 superatoms. Counterintuitive results were explained by a bent bonding model based on tilted bonding interaction between the superatomic orbitals.
