Electrostatically-gated molecular rotors

Binzhou Lin et al.

Summary: The ability to control molecular-scale motion using electrostatic interactions was demonstrated by utilizing an N-phenylsuccinimide molecular rotor with an electrostatic pyridyl-gate. Protonation of the pyridal-gate leads to stabilizing electrostatic interactions, significantly reducing the rotational barrier and enhancing the rotation rate. Molecular modeling and energy decomposition analysis confirm the critical role of attractive electrostatic interactions in lowering the bond rotation transition state.

Molecular Pumps and Motors

Yuanning Feng et al.

Summary: Pumps and motors are crucial components in our world, and the advent of artificial molecular machines has provided scientists with unprecedented control over molecular motion through kinetically controlled, away-from-thermodynamic equilibrium chemistry. By designing molecules with kinetic asymmetry, potential landscapes can be engineered to harness external energy for the formation and maintenance of geometric structures of molecular components away from equilibrium.

Heteroleptic Copper(I) Complexes Prepared from Mono- and Tetra-phenylbenzene-substituted Phenanthroline Ligands

Brigino Ralahy et al.

Summary: Phenanthroline ligands with different substituents were synthesized to prepare corresponding copper(I) complexes. While biphenyl-substituted ligands can form homoleptic copper(I) complexes, tetraarylbenzene-substituted ligands cannot. The obtained copper(I) complexes exhibit dynamic conformational exchange in solution.

Confronting molecular rotors and self-quenched dimers as fluorogenic BODIPY systems to probe biotin receptors in cancer cells

Kyong T. Fam et al.

Summary: Probing cell surface receptors using fluorogenic dyes can help monitor their expression levels, with biotin receptors (BRs) being of particular interest due to their overexpression in cancer cells. In this study, two fluorogenic systems based on BODIPYs were adapted and compared, with the fluorogenic dimer proving more efficient than the rotor in imaging BRs in cancer cells and effectively discriminating them from non-cancer cells.

Computational modeling of dynein motor proteins at work

Mandira Dutta et al.

Summary: In order to explore different length and time-scale processes in biological systems, a combination of experimental, theoretical, and computational methods is essential. Dynein, as an ATP-fueled motor protein, undergoes a wide range of length/time-scale events in its functional mechanism, performing various biological processes like ciliary beating and cell division. Experimental techniques like X-crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy have provided detailed insights into the mechanochemical cycle of dynein, but computational modeling of dynein remains challenging due to its complex architecture. The comprehensive investigation of the mechanochemical cycle of dynein requires a combination of computational methods covering varying length and timescales, similar to experimental approaches.
