Fluorescent responses of CdSe and Si QDs toward Copper (II) ion and the mixed-QDs probe for Cu2+ ion sensing

Nattakarn Phromsiri et al.

Summary: In this study, a new ratiometric mixed-QDs probe for the quantification of Cu2+ in an aqueous solution was reported. This probe combines the concepts of ratiometric and fluorescence resonance energy transfer. The detection method is simple, fast, sensitive, selective, and accurate, with a low detection limit for Cu2+ and high selectivity towards other biological and environmental relevant ions. Additionally, the mixed-QDs probe shows potential for naked-eye detection of Cu2+ in water samples and biological specimens.

Entropy of Branching Out: Linear versus Branched Alkylthiols Ligands on CdSe Nanocrystals

Orian Elimelech et al.

Summary: The surface ligands of semiconductor nanocrystals play a crucial role in their colloidal stability and physicochemical properties. In this study, the impact of the ligand chain backbone structure on the thermodynamics of the exchange reaction for oleate coated CdSe NCs was investigated. The results showed that branched ligands have lower exothermicity and entropy loss compared to linear ligands, due to steric hindrance in ligand packing. The findings suggest that a short, branched ligand with a short branching group located toward the middle of the ligand chain is the most entropic ligand.

Unraveling Changes to PbS Nanocrystal Surfaces Induced by Thiols

Melody L. Kessler et al.

Summary: This study reports three separate ligand-based reaction mechanisms between oleate-capped PbS nanocrystals and undec-10-ene-1-thiol (UDT), and reveals how these three pathways are intertwined. Experimental evidence shows different reaction pathways occur depending on the quantity of UDT added, including Z-type displacement, L-type binding, and X-type exchange mechanisms.

Structural Design of Multidentate Copolymers as Compact Quantum Dot Coatings for Live-Cell Single-Particle Imaging

Zhiyuan Han et al.

Summary: Quantum dots (QDs) are widely used semiconductor nanocrystals in life science studies. A focus of research is to reduce the size of QDs to enhance their accessibility to biological targets. By coating QDs with multidentate polymer coatings, the researchers were able to achieve compact and stable QDs with smaller hydrodynamic sizes. The study also found that the structural characteristics of the polymers play a crucial role in determining the hydrodynamic size, colloidal stability, and biomolecular interactions of the coated QDs. The findings provide insights for the design of next-generation QDs with sizes approaching fluorescent protein labels.

Z-Type Ligand Coordination at Colloidal Semiconductor Nanocrystals Modifies Surface Electrostatics

Keaton Prather et al.

Summary: Heterobimetallic tetracarbonylferrate compounds were used as Z-type ligands on the surfaces of CdSe, ZnS, and PbS nanocrystals for surface trap passivation. In the absence of Lewis bases, ligand coordination occurs through substitution reactions. The presence of amines shifts the energy levels of the ligands, indicating changes in the nanocrystal surface electric field.

Thermodynamics of the Adsorption of Cadmium Oleate to Cadmium Sulfide Quantum Dots and Implications of a Dynamic Ligand Shell

Jason J. Calvin et al.

Summary: Adsorbed surface ligands play a crucial role in the chemical and physical properties of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, especially their optical properties. In this study, tetrahydrofuran was used as a coordinating solvent to create a dynamic ligand equilibrium, allowing the measurement of the adsorption energy of cadmium oleate on the surface of cadmium sulfide quantum dots. Quantum chemical calculations and Ising-model-based simulations were also employed to investigate the thermodynamics and interligand interactions of the quantum dot surface. The effects of a dynamic ligand shell on the optical properties of quantum dots were explored, suggesting that a static ligand shell provides higher quantum yields.
