Horizontal miscible displacements through porous media: the interplay between viscous fingering and gravity segregation

Japinder S. Nijjer et al.

Summary: This study investigates miscible displacements in 2D homogeneous porous media, considering the viscosity ratio, density variations, and background flow represented by the Peclet number. The dynamics evolve through nine regimes, involving processes like longitudinal diffusion, vertical flow, and gravity currents. Simplified models are developed to describe the evolution of the concentration field in each regime. Three case studies are also conducted to illustrate the physical balances in CO2 geological storage.

CO2 convective dissolution in a three-dimensional granular porous medium: An experimental study

Christophe Brouzet et al.

Summary: This study investigates the storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep saline aquifers and the resulting convective dissolution instability. Experimental results show a significant discrepancy between the measured growth rate of the instability and theoretical predictions, with the measured rate being one to three orders of magnitude larger. The study suggests that accounting for sub-Darcy-scale flow heterogeneities may be necessary to accurately predict convective dissolution during CO2 subsurface sequestration.

Convective dissolution of carbon dioxide in two- and three-dimensional porous media: The impact of hydrodynamic dispersion

J. Dhar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of hydrodynamic dispersion tensor on convective dissolution in geological formations. The efficiency of convective dissolution is affected by longitudinal and transverse dispersion, with the former slowing down the process and the latter accelerating it. The research also highlights the differences between 2D and 3D results in terms of onset time of convection and finger number density.

Spreading and mixing during solutal convection in uniform porous media with application to geologic CO2 storage

A-M Eckel et al.

Summary: The study numerically investigates convective dissolution in saline aquifers and reveals an acceleration of the mixing process over time, transitioning from diffusive to superdiffusive mixing patterns regardless of Ra. The onset time of convection and the linear reduction of time needed to reach close-to-complete mixing with Ra are significant findings. The non-dimensional mass flux, expressed in terms of the Sherwood number, exhibits a natural logarithmic scaling for Ra <= 2 500.
