Single- and Multifraction Stereotactic Radiosurgery Dose/Volume Tolerances of the Brain

Michael T. Milano et al.

Summary: This study pooled data from 51 reports to investigate radiation-induced brain toxicity after hypofractionated radiation therapy. Results showed wide variability in rates of radionecrosis, with single-fraction SRS tissue volumes receiving 12 Gy associated with risks of symptomatic radionecrosis. The use of fSRS appears to reduce risks of radionecrosis for larger treatment volumes compared to SRS.

Melatonin ameliorates microvessel abnormalities in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease

Pan Wang et al.

Summary: Melatonin administration alleviated learning and memory impairments, improved microvessel morphology in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus, increased microvessel density, alleviated pathological injuries of cerebral neurons, and decreased the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and its receptors in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease. This suggests that melatonin may improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease by ameliorating cerebral microvascular abnormalities.

Effect of electroacupuncture on glial fibrillary acidic protein and nerve growth factor in the hippocampus of rats with hyperlipidemia and middle cerebral artery thrombus

Na-Ying Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, electroacupuncture (EA) was applied to rats with hyperlipemia and middle cerebral artery thrombosis, showing a reduction in blood lipid levels, inhibition of glial fibrillary acidic protein expression, and promotion of nerve growth factor expression in the hippocampal CA1 region. The therapeutic effect of EA was superior in reducing blood lipid levels and promoting neural repair after hyperlipemia and middle cerebral artery thrombosis.
