Pathways towards sustainable concrete

D. Coffetti et al.

Summary: This paper discusses various alternative strategies to improve the sustainability of concrete, including applying the latest technologies to manufacture traditional Portland cement, substituting traditional constituents with alternative binders, using recycled aggregates and non-drinking water, and developing high-durability/high-performance mixtures. The paper also highlights the importance of upgrading existing standards and educating designers, researchers, and contractors to promote the development and diffusion of new concrete technologies. It proposes a new sustainability index for mortars and concretes manufactured with negative carbon footprint materials.

An efficient approach for simultaneously obtaining oil and epigoitrin from Orychophragmus violaceus seeds by microwave-mediated immiscible binary solvent extraction

Ru Zhao et al.

Summary: Microwave-mediated immiscible binary solvent extraction (MIBSE) was successfully used to extract oil and epigoitrin from Orychophragmus violaceus seeds, with the optimal conditions identified. The actual yields of oil and epigoitrin were determined, and the fatty acid compositions of the seed oils were found to be similar between MIBSE and Soxhlet extraction methods. The purity of the separated epigoitrin was high according to HPLC analyses, followed by NMR determinations.
