Separation and detection of E. coli O157:H7 using a SERS-based microfluidic immunosensor

Sara Asgari et al.

Summary: A sensitive SERS-based microfluidic immunosensor was developed for the separation and detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in romaine lettuce. The combination of SERS nanoprobes and a hydrodynamic flow-focusing microfluidic device provides a reliable, selective, and sensitive approach for the detection of various pathogens in complex food samples.

Microfluidic paper-based aptasensor devices for multiplexed detection of pathogenic bacteria

Sandeep B. Somvanshi et al.

Summary: Foodborne pathogens are a major concern for public health globally. In this study, a novel paper-based microfluidic device was developed to simultaneously detect multiple foodborne bacteria. The device provides quantitative readings through image analysis and utilizes custom designed particles for signal enhancement and false results prevention. The results show linearity over a wide concentration range and high specificity, making this device suitable for on-site rapid screening of pathogenic bacteria in water and food products.

A microfluidic colorimetric biosensor for in-field detection of Salmonella in fresh-cut vegetables using thiolated polystyrene microspheres, hose-based microvalve and smartphone imaging APP

Yan Man et al.

Summary: A microfluidic colorimetric biosensor using thiolated polystyrene microspheres and gold nanoparticles for aggregation, a novel hose-based microvalve for flow control, and a smartphone imaging APP for signal monitoring was developed. Detection of Salmonella was achieved using aptamer-PS-cysteamine conjugates as detection probes and cDNA-MNP conjugates as capture probes. The biosensor exhibited good specificity and potential application in real samples, with a detection limit as low as 6.0 × 101 cfu/mL.

A microfluidic biosensor for rapid and automatic detection of Salmonella using metal-organic framework and Raspberry Pi

Wuzhen Qi et al.

Summary: A microfluidic biosensor was developed for rapid, sensitive, and automatic detection of Salmonella in contaminated foods. The biosensor showed the ability to detect Salmonella Typhimurium with a detection limit of 14 CFU/mL in just 1 hour. The integration of mixing, separation, labelling, and detection on a single microfluidic chip demonstrated automatic operation, fast reaction, less reagent usage, and small size, making it promising for in-field detection of foodborne bacteria.

Point-of-Care PCR Assays for COVID-19 Detection

Niharika Gupta et al.

Summary: Molecular diagnostics, including RT-PCR and qRT-PCR, have been vital in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to these gold standards, faster antigen tests and other point-of-care devices have also played a crucial role in containing the spread of the virus. The development of miniaturized, high-throughput PCR systems, digital PCR, electrochemical PCR, and CRISPR/Cas technology for POC diagnostics are areas of increasing interest and research focus. Commercial RT-PCR POC systems approved for COVID-19 detection by various agencies have also been discussed.
