Modified Landau model for fluids: A rethink of pseudoboiling theory for supercritical fluids

Minyun Liu et al.

Summary: A new model based on Landau theory is proposed to predict the density and isobaric specific heat capacity distortions of supercritical fluids. The model provides reasonable explanations for subcritical gas-liquid transition and critical/pseudo-critical phenomena. The results indicate the validity of macroscopic mean field approximations even in the presence of microscale inhomogeneity.

Recent trends of supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle: Bibliometric analysis and research review

Aofang Yu et al.

Summary: The supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle has been widely applied in various heat sources in recent decades due to its compact structure and high efficiency. Analysis shows that the United States is the leading country in S-CO2 research, followed by China and South Korea. Future development should focus on accelerating the commercialization of S-CO2 power systems.

Two Faces of the Two-Phase Thermodynamic Model

Adam Madarasz et al.

Summary: The study reanalyzed the impact of quantum corrections on the heat capacities of organic solvents and pointed out serious flaws in previous research, especially the errors caused by incorrect vibrational density calculations. The introduction of the concept of anharmonic correction was used to assess the applicability of the classical heat capacity and harmonic oscillator model.

Thermodynamics and Dynamics of Supercritical Water Pseudo-Boiling

Florentina Maxim et al.

Summary: The study provides a quantitative analysis of the thermodynamics and dynamics of water's pseudo-boiling phenomenon. It shows that during isobaric heating near the critical point, water density drops by a factor of three in the pseudo-boiling transitional region, requiring over 16 times less energy to increase its temperature by 1 K than to change its structure from liquid-like to gas-like phase. Above the pseudo-boiling Widom line, liquid-like water consists mainly of tetramers and trimers, while below the line, mostly dimers and monomers form in the gas-like phase.

Numerical study on convective heat transfer of supercritical CO2 in vertically upward and downward tubes

Yan ChenShuai et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study the heat transfer characteristics of sCO(2) in vertical flow. Results indicate that the formation of gas-like film is the primary factor affecting heat transfer behavior, and the total thermal resistance in upward flow is always larger than that in downward flow.

The Anomalous Behavior of Thermodynamic Parameters in the Three Widom Deltas of Carbon Dioxide-Ethanol Mixture

Evgenii Igorevich Mareev et al.

Summary: Using molecular dynamics simulation, three Widom δ regions were identified in the p-T diagram of a mixture of carbon dioxide and ethanol, characterized by high-density fluctuations and anomalous behavior of thermodynamic parameters. These regions are attributed to the formation of large mixed linear clusters, with two corresponding to pure supercritical carbon dioxide and ethanol, and the third located near the critical point of the binary mixture.

Dynamic Crossover in Fluids: From Hard Spheres to Molecules

Ian H. Bell et al.

Summary: A new definition reconciling structural and dynamic frameworks, in combination with the entropy scaling framework, is proposed to define the crossover line between gas- and liquid-like behaviors. This definition emphasizes the balance between the contribution to viscosity due to molecules' translation and molecular interactions, showing consistency with the definition based on the minima of kinematic viscosity.

Phase distribution including a bubblelike region in supercritical fluid

Jinliang Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigates pseudoboiling in supercritical fluid using molecular dynamics simulations, defining onset and termination pseudoboiling temperatures and observing nanovoids with bubble characteristics. The research divides the phase diagram into liquidlike, two-phase-like, and gaslike regimes, highlighting the multiphase nature of supercritical fluid. The nonlinear dynamics in the two-phase-like regime demonstrates chaotic behavior, similar to subcritical pressures.

The role of supercritical carbon dioxide for recovery of shale gas and sequestration in gas shale reservoirs

Qiao Lyu et al.

Summary: The development of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques has expanded the exploitation of shale gas resources, but potential environmental issues with water usage have prompted research on supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) as an alternative stimulation fluid. SC-CO2 has shown promise in enhancing shale gas recovery and potentially sequestering CO2 in shale reservoirs, thus reducing carbon emissions. Understanding shale-CO2 interactions and the long-term effects of SC-CO2 injection is crucial for the efficiency and environmental impact of this technology.

Diffusion of the carbon dioxide-ethanol mixture in the extended critical region

Rene Spencer Chatwell et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of traces of ethanol in supercritical carbon dioxide on the mixture's thermodynamic properties through molecular simulations and Taylor dispersion measurements. The study reveals two transitions along the isobar path, from liquid-like to gas-like conditions at the Widom line, and from supercritical gas-like domain to subcritical gas. The presence of microheterogeneities due to ethanol self-association leads to anomalous behavior in the mixture's extended critical region, as shown by dedicated atomistic simulations.
