The 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl group as solubilizing protective group for the in situ deprotection/deposition of extended aromatic thiolate monolayers

Adrian Wiesner et al.

Summary: The low solubility of precursors often hampers the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of aromatic thiolates. In this study, the 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl group was introduced as a protective group to increase the solubility and stability of the precursor. The resulting SAMs have demonstrated the same structure and quality as those obtained from unprotected thiols.

Thermal Stability of Alkanethiolate and Aromatic Thiolate Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au(111): An X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study

Andika Asyuda et al.

Summary: The thermal stability of archetypical alkanethiolate and aromatic thiolate self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces was studied, showing stability at certain temperatures followed by molecular desorption and decomposition. The degradation was mainly due to the cleavage of C-S bonds, impacting the overall stability of the monolayers.

A single atom change turns insulating saturated wires into molecular conductors

Xiaoping Chen et al.

Summary: By changing the terminal atoms in molecular structures, the tunnelling effects can be efficiently modulated, leading to a significant increase in current density. The study also demonstrates that dielectric constants, HOMO-LUMO gaps, and contact resistance can affect the modulation of tunnelling effects.

Charge transport through molecular ensembles: Recent progress in molecular electronics

Yuru Liu et al.

Summary: Molecular ensemble junctions, with individual molecules spanning two electrodes, favor quantum mechanical tunneling for charge transport, enabling the creation of molecule-scale electronic devices that may outperform traditional semiconductors. Although more difficult to model, these structures can be incorporated into integrated circuits, offering a high level of complexity and functionality.
