Quantifying effect of tassels on near-ground maize canopy RGB images using deep learning segmentation algorithm

Mingchao Shao et al.

Summary: Vegetation indexes are crucial for monitoring crop growth and productivity, but the spectral traits of tassels can affect the accuracy of using canopy vegetation indices. This study proposed a method for rapid and non-destructive tassel removal using deep learning, analyzing the impact of tassels on canopy spectral information. Results showed that tassels significantly reduce canopy reflectance in the green wavelength range and contribute differently to various VIs, with the U-Net model demonstrating the best segmentation precision.

Estimating maize seedling number with UAV RGB images and advanced image processing methods

Shuaibing Liu et al.

Summary: Accurately identifying the quantity of maize seedlings is important for improving high seedling emergence rates in a breeding program. Traditional manual methods are labor-intensive and time-consuming, but recently, UAV observation methods have been utilized to monitor crop growth. This research developed three models for automatically counting maize seedlings and validated their effectiveness using RGB images. The results showed high maize seedling recognition rates for the three models.
