Adsorption/desorption of naphthalene and phenanthrene in a binary competitive system in the riparian zone

Weihong Dong et al.

Summary: This study found competitive adsorption of Nap and Phe in binary system, where Phe had a stronger inhibitory effect on Nap and was preferentially adsorbed. The riparian zone showed stronger performance for removing Phe than Nap in the study area. The results could be helpful in alleviating Nap and Phe pollution in groundwater and developing treatment protocols.

Glyphosate adsorption onto kaolinite and kaolinite-humic acid composites: Experimental and molecular dynamics studies

Fayang Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular interactions between glyphosate and kaolinite and kaolinite-humic acid complexes. The results showed that kaolinite-humic acid complexes adsorb higher concentrations of glyphosate than kaolinite alone due to more adsorption sites and hydrogen bonding interactions present. Molecular dynamics simulations further demonstrated that glyphosate molecules adsorb parallel to the surface of kaolinite and the composites through hydrogen bonding, with humic acid facilitating the adsorption through the creation of H-bond networks.

A Pseudomonas sp. strain uniquely degrades PAHs and heterocyclic derivatives via lateral dioxygenation pathways

Yunli Liu et al.

Summary: The newly isolated Pseudomonas brassicacearum strain MPDS effectively degrades PAHs and heterocyclic derivatives through a unique lateral dioxygenation pathway. Genomic and transcriptomic analyses allowed for the identification of relevant gene clusters and provided new insights into the degradation mechanisms of these pollutants.

Full-scale bioremediation of diesel-polluted soil in an Arctic landfarm

Anders R. Johnsen et al.

Summary: The experimental landfarm tested for the capacity to biodegrade oil-polluted soil under high-Arctic tundra conditions showed a rapid degradation of diesel but with a recalcitrant fraction remaining after five years. Optimization of microbial diesel biodegradation through yearly addition of fertilizer, plowing, and irrigation proved to be effective in removing a significant portion of the diesel from the soil. Oil-degrading microorganisms present in the landfarm showed large population increases, indicating their role in the biodegradation process.
