Vertical distributions of aerosol microphysical and optical properties based on aircraft measurements made over the Loess Plateau in China

Zhaoxin Cai et al.

Summary: Based on aircraft measurements in the eastern Loess Plateau during a summer aircraft campaign in 2020, the aerosol microphysical properties and their vertical distributions were analyzed. The results showed that aerosol concentrations decreased with height, and the increase in scattering coefficients and black carbon concentration contributed the most to the total aerosol radiative forcing.

Submicron-scale aerosol above the city canopy in Beijing in spring based on in-situ meteorological tower measurements

Qingqing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the non-refractory submicron-scale aerosol (NR-PM1) chemical species in the spring atmosphere above the city of Beijing. It reveals that organic aerosol (Org) shows the most significant vertical difference, with higher concentrations at ground level compared to 260m. The study also highlights the regional transport characteristics of sulfate (SO4) and chloride, as well as the enrichment of nitrate (NO3) and Org at ground level.

Primary Emissions and Secondary Aerosol Processing During Wintertime in Rural Area of North China Plain

Chun Chen et al.

Summary: Rural areas in the winter in North China Plain experience severe haze pollution due to aerosol particles, particularly organic aerosol (OA), but the sources and processes of these particles are not well understood. Real-time measurements in a representative rural site in 2019 showed that primary sources of OA include traffic emissions, coal combustion, and biomass burning, while secondary OA from photochemical and aqueous-phase processing was more dominant. The study also observed enhanced secondary formation in winter 2019 compared to winter 2018, with changes in aerosol composition and size distributions during fog events.

Estimating cloud condensation nuclei concentrations from CALIPSO lidar measurements

Goutam Choudhury et al.

Summary: We present a novel methodology to estimate cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations from spaceborne lidar measurements. The algorithm incorporates various observations and models to estimate aerosol number concentration and calculate CCN concentrations at different supersaturations. The results show that the algorithm has an uncertainty range of 2 to 3 and demonstrates good calculation accuracy.

Summary: In Spring 2016, high mixing ratios of Montreal Protocol-controlled gases were found in the air over Hebei province, China, with evidence of new production of CFC-114 from the southeast region, contradicting the ban on CFC production under the Montreal Protocol agreement.

Measurement report: The effect of aerosol chemical composition on light scattering due to the hygroscopic swelling effect

Rongmin Ren et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of liquid water on the optical properties of aerosol particles using measurements made in southern Beijing in 2019. Results show that the proportions of inorganic and organic matter impact the particle light scattering enhancement, with nitrate playing a more significant role in aerosol hygroscopicity in Beijing. Development of parameterization schemes for the particle light scattering enhancement factor is necessary to account for deliquescent and non-deliquescent effects, reducing uncertainties in simulating aerosol hygroscopicity.

Measurement report: Altitudinal variation of cloud condensation nuclei activation across the Indo-Gangetic Plain prior to monsoon onset and during peak monsoon periods: results from the SWAAMI field campaign

Mohanan R. Manoj et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distributions and spatial variations of condensation nuclei (CN) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) across the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) during the contrasting phases of the Indian monsoon. Results show that high concentrations of CN and CCN were prevalent before the monsoon onset, with frequent occurrence of elevated layers in the altitude range of 1-3 km. However, during the active phase of the monsoon, CN and CCN concentrations dropped throughout the IGP, with more pronounced reductions at altitudes higher than 3 km.
