The state of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil has experienced a significant number of tuberculosis cases, with higher prevalence among economically active males and individuals with lower education. The infection is also prominent in prison settings.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease with impact in the whole world and also in Brazil. The disease is related to socio-economic conditions as well as failures in public policies to fight against it. Objective: Describe and analyze TB cases in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, from 2010 to 2018. Method: Retrospective research of TB cases through the Informa-tion System of Notification of Grievances (SINAM, according to acronym in Portuguese). Results: Information of gender and age was considered; there were 7336 male cases and about 1443 female cases. TB mainly affects people within economically active ages, bet- ween 20 and 59. Infected people are more likely to have lower education; the population with TB in prisons is significant. Conclusion: TB cases are going down and Brazil is investing to diagnose and prevent it; it is important to discuss effective strategies to control TB in urban areas and in prisons.
