A Systematic Review on Commercially Available and Validated Sensor Technologies for Welfare Assessment of Dairy Cattle

Anna H. Stygar et al.

Summary: This study provided a systematic overview of externally validated and commercially available precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies for sensor-based welfare assessment in dairy cattle. Only a small percentage of sensors on the market have been externally validated. The validated technologies mainly focus on assessing animal activity, feeding and drinking behavior, physical condition, and health, with limited potential for assessing appropriate behavior of dairy cows.

Exploring the Potential of Precision Livestock Farming Technologies to Help Address Farm Animal Welfare

Juliette Schillings et al.

Summary: The increase in demand for animal products has made it harder to address societal concerns related to the environment, human health, and animal welfare. Precision Livestock Farming technologies offer opportunities to monitor animal health and welfare but also raise ethical concerns about potential harm to welfare and the human-animal relationship. Further development and adoption of these technologies are needed to maximize benefits to animal welfare.
