Mineralogical, geochemical, and textural characteristics of soil and airborne samples during dust storms in Khuzestan, southwest Iran

Neamat MalAmiri et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mineralogic and geochemical characteristics of dust sediments in southwest Iran during three dust-storm events in 2018. The results showed that the dust storms mainly consisted of coarse to giant particles, with calcite being the dominant mineral and high amounts of trace elements indicating anthropogenic origin or pollutant contamination. High levels of heavy metal contamination in the samples were attributed to pollution from fossil-fuel combustion, gas and petroleum drilling activities, war-related materiel, and emissions from polluting industries.

Dominant role of mineral dust in cirrus cloud formation revealed by global-scale measurements

Summary: Mineral dust particles play a critical role in the formation of cirrus clouds, according to global-scale dust observations and a cirrus-formation model. The formation of cirrus clouds in the Northern Hemisphere is primarily triggered by mineral dust.

The Urmia playa as a source of airborne dust and ice-nucleating particles - Part 2: Unraveling the relationship between soil dust composition and ice nucleation activity

Nikou Hamzehpour et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction of minerals, soluble salts, and organic matter in determining the ice nucleation activity of saline soils and dust. The research finds that organic matter dominates the ice nucleation activity, while carbonates and soluble salts inhibit it. Additionally, the study suggests that the basic pH of the samples and the presence of soluble salts may be the reasons why quartz and microcline cannot act as ice-nucleating particles.

The impact of (bio-)organic substances on the ice nucleation activity of the K-feldspar microcline in aqueous solutions

Kristian Klumpp et al.

Summary: The effects of organic and bio-organic substances on the ice nucleation activity of microcline were investigated. The results showed that different types of solutes had different effects on the ice nucleation activity. Furthermore, the experiments demonstrated the remarkable sensitivity of microcline ice nucleation activity to surface interactions with various solutes, emphasizing the importance of the history of such particles from the source to frozen cloud droplets in the atmosphere.

Ice Nucleating Particle Connections to Regional Argentinian Land Surface Emissions and Weather During the Cloud, Aerosol, and Complex Terrain Interactions Experiment

Baptiste Testa et al.

Summary: A multi-season study in north-central Argentina found that heat-labile biological INPs dominated at temperatures between -5 and -20 degrees C, while non-heat-labile organic INPs were prevalent at lower temperatures. The study also highlighted the influence of regional arable topsoil on INP activity, with known mineral INP sources identified along with a significant organic component in soil particles aerosolized from common agricultural topsoil. This suggests that the observed INP spectra may be typical of many arable landscapes worldwide.

Effects of Inorganic Acids and Organic Solutes on the Ice Nucleating Ability and Surface Properties of Potassium-Rich Feldspar

Jingwei Yun et al.

Summary: The study found that inorganic acids and carboxylic acids significantly affect the ice nucleating ability of potassium-rich feldspar, while polyols have no significant effect. The impact of oxalic acid and inorganic acids on ice nucleating ability is mainly related to the pH of the droplets, while the effect of different types of carboxylic acids on potassium-rich feldspar is inconsistent.

The contribution of Saharan dust to the ice-nucleating particle concentrations at the High Altitude Station Jungfraujoch (3580 m a.s.l.), Switzerland

Cyril Brunner et al.

Summary: Investigating the frequency of Saharan dust events and their contribution to ice nucleating particle (INP) number concentrations, it was found that each dust event showed an increase in median INP concentrations compared to non-dust event periods, although not always statistically significant. Satellite data suggested that mineral dust is present outside of dust events at JFJ, albeit at lower concentrations, still impacting the INP population.
