Impacts of COVID-19 on Sustainable Development Goals and effective approaches to maneuver them in the post-pandemic environment

Rajvikram Madurai Elavarasan et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on each Sustainable Development Goal and provide direction to accelerate progress in the post-pandemic environment. Through a quantitative and qualitative framework, it is found that SDG 1 and SDG 8 are the most impacted goals. The study also introduces a novel parameter, the degree of randomness, and maps the interaction between all the SDGs to elaborate on the dynamics of Sustainable Development Goal interactions.

What are socially disruptive technologies?

Jeroen Hopster

Summary: The scholarly discourse on disruptive technologies has been primarily influenced by disruptive innovation theory, which focuses on disruptions in markets and business, but lacks the ability to analyze the broader social, moral, and existential dynamics of technosocial disruption. This paper aims to reorient scholarly discussion around a broader notion of technosocial disruption, raising questions about how it differs from disruptive innovation, its relation to disruptor and disruptiveness, and the criteria for assessing the social disruptiveness of technologies. It proposes technosocial disruption as a key focus for future scholarship on the interactions between technology and society.

Distributed Dual Coordinate Ascent in General Tree Networks and Communication Network Effect on Synchronous Machine Learning

Myung Cho et al.

Summary: This paper explores the convergence rate of distributed dual coordinate ascent for machine learning on a general tree-structured network. By analyzing the network effect and optimizing the algorithm considering communication delays, the study aims to maximize convergence speed. Numerical experiments demonstrate the algorithm's usability in tree networks where direct communication to a central node is not possible.
