Field theories for type-II fractons

Weslei B. Fontana et al.

Summary: The paper presents an effective field theory for a type-II fracton starting from the Haah code on the lattice. It also discusses a Chern-Simons-like theory from the opposite perspective, i.e., starting from the continuum, which does not require a constraint or projector and has no mobile excitations.

Global dipole symmetry, compact Lifshitz theory, tensor gauge theory, and fractons

Pranay Gorantla et al.

Summary: This study investigates field theories with global dipole symmetries and gauge dipole symmetries. By placing these theories on a lattice and taking the continuum limit, various subtleties in the precise meaning of these symmetries are resolved. The study reveals that different continuum limits lead to different theories with different properties, symmetries, etc. Additionally, the study discovers that certain physical observables are highly dependent on the number of lattice sites, and introduces the concept of timelike global symmetries to explain the mobility restrictions of defects.

Fractonic order in infinite-component Chern-Simons gauge theories

Xiuqi Ma et al.

Summary: The paper generalizes the (2 + 1)-dimensional U(1) Chern-Simons theory to study new types of (3 + 1)-dimensional fracton order beyond what is known from existing models. It finds examples of fracton systems characterized by infinite order 2D excitations and irrational braiding statistics.

Dynamical signatures of rank-2 U (1) spin liquids

Emily Z. Zhang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on emergent U(1) gauge theories and artificial photons in frustrated magnets, exploring their behavior in classical and quantum regimes. Unique characteristics of the R2-U1 spin liquid state are identified, providing a pathway for future experimental investigations.

Rank-2 toric code in two dimensions

Yun-Tak Oh et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate a two-dimensional spin model obtained by Higgsing a rank-2 U(1) lattice gauge theory. The resulting spin model is a stabilizer code and can be exactly solved. We identify two types of dipole excitations and analyze the braiding phase between monopoles and dipoles.

Subdimensional criticality: Condensation of lineons and planons in the X-cube model

Ethan Lake et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate quantum phase transitions occurring outside of the fracton ordered phase of the Z(N) X-cube model. These phase transitions are characterized by the condensation of subdimensional excitations and their composites, resulting in either trivial paramagnets or stacks of D = 2 or 3 deconfined gauge theories. The nature of these transitions depends on the type of excitations being condensed, leading to stable critical points or gapless intermediate phases. Effective subsystem symmetries arising from mobility constraints on X-cube phase excitations play a crucial role in analyzing the phase transitions.

Fractons with twisted boundary conditions and their symmetries

Tom Rudelius et al.

Summary: The study of exotic systems like the X-cube model on a flat three-torus with twist in the xy plane reveals sensitivity of ground-state degeneracy to various geometric parameters. Different continuum limits from a lattice result in different values of ground-state degeneracy, but a natural limit exists with a well-defined infinite value. A surprising global symmetry is found in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional systems, originating from underlying subsystem symmetries and realized differently depending on the twist.

Lattice Clifford fractons and their Chern-Simons-like theory

Weslei B. Fontana et al.

Summary: The Dirac matrix representations of the Clifford algebra are utilized to construct fracton models on the lattice and their effective theory. An example is provided for lattice fractons in odd spatial dimensions and their effective theory in (D + 1) spacetime dimensions, resembling the hierarchical quantum Hall states. The model features an anti-symmetric K matrix and conserves gauge charges in sub-dimensional manifolds to ensure fractonic behavior, with potential extension to any lattice fracton model built from commuting projectors with spin-1/2 degrees of freedom at the sites.
