CA-Markov model application to predict crop yield using remote sensing indices

Marzieh Mokarram et al.

Summary: This study uses a novel meteorological drought-based approach to predict the yield of pomegranate and palm trees in southern Iran, and identifies the most effective drought indices through remote-sensing indices and principal component analysis. The results predict that approximately 50-60% of the region will have low yields for these crops in 2040. This approach provides a framework for predicting the decreasing crop yield due to drought effects and supporting decision-making in sustainable horticultural management.

Assessment of the variation and influencing factors of vegetation NPP and carbon sink capacity under different natural conditions

Xindong Wei et al.

Summary: This study explores the spatiotemporal variation in vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) and the carbon sink capacity in Shaanxi Province, China. The results show an increasing trend in NPP and carbon sink capacity from 2000 to 2019, with higher values in the south compared to the north. The study also highlights the sensitivity of NPP to precipitation and the bimodal variation with elevation. Understanding these patterns is crucial for ecological protection and restoration efforts.

A Quantitative Analysis of the Influence of Temperature Change on the Extreme Precipitation

Wei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examined the correlation and change trends of temperature and extreme precipitation indicators in Inner Mongolia from 1960 to 2019. The results showed a positive correlation between temperature and rainfall intensity, while other indicators exhibited a negative correlation. Rainfall intensity was found to be significantly increasing, while annual precipitation and annual wet days showed a significant decreasing trend.

Spatiotemporal Variations and Climatological Trends in Precipitation Indices in Shaanxi Province, China

Shuangtao Wang et al.

Summary: Precipitation patterns in Shaanxi Province, China exhibit higher concentration in the south and lower concentration in the north. The annual distribution of rainfall is uneven, with a decreasing trend over the past few decades. These findings are significant for water resource management and drought risk assessment in Shaanxi Province.

How did the Chinese Loess Plateau turn green from 2001 to 2020? An explanation using satellite data

Liang He et al.

Summary: The Grain to Green Programme has improved vegetation growth in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Precipitation, sunshine duration, humidity, radiation, and vegetation type are the main factors affecting the spatial distribution of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in the area. Human activities have a dominant influence on NDVI variations. The study also found a risk of vegetation degradation in the region.

Quantifying the contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation dynamic in China based on multiple indices

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: Distinguishing the contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation dynamics is crucial for sustainable environmental management. This study used the residual trend method to quantify the relative contributions of human activities and climate change to vegetation trends in China from 1988 to 2018. The results showed that human activities played a major role in the increase of NDVI and GPP, while the dynamics of VOD were influenced by a balance of human activities and climate change. The relative roles of climate and human factors varied across different regions.

LAI-indicated vegetation dynamic in ecologically fragile region: A case study in the Three-North Shelter Forest program region of China

Yungang Hu et al.

Summary: The Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP) region in China is an important ecological area covering over 42.4% of China's land. Despite various ecological restoration projects implemented, evaluation work has been limited. Leaf area index was proposed as an indicator to evaluate the ecological restoration situation, with analysis conducted using GLASS LAI dataset from 2000 to 2015. Forest cover slightly increased, mainly in regions with annual precipitation greater than 400 mm, while grassland area decreased.

Forest Changes by Precipitation Zones in Northern China after the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program in China

Han Li et al.

Summary: China launched the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program in 1978 to combat desertification and dust storms, which is still controversial due to uncertainties in monitoring forest distribution changes. This study provides an overview of forest changes in northern China from 2007 to 2017, showing significant forest expansion in central and eastern areas but higher forest loss rates in arid and semi-arid regions with lower precipitation. The study suggests that future ecological restoration projects should consider the likely impacts of precipitation on afforestation effectiveness.

Wenjing Huang et al.

Summary: The systematic analysis of surface water dynamics in Central Asia is crucial for human survival and ecosystem balance in the region. However, long-term continuous monitoring of surface water remains a challenge due to limitations in spatial resolution. By using Landsat images and interpolation methods, the study finds a decline in permanent surface water areas in downstream countries like Kazakhstan, with human activities being a major driving factor. The findings highlight the water crisis in Central Asia and the need for sustainable water resource management to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
