Evolutionary Adaptation by Repetitive Long-Term Cultivation with Gradual Increase in Temperature for Acquiring Multi-Stress Tolerance and High Ethanol Productivity in Kluyveromyces marxianus DMKU 3-1042

Sornsiri Pattanakittivorakul et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop multi-stress tolerant strains of Kluyveromyces marxianus through a novel evolutionary adaptation procedure called RLCGT, and to increase ethanol production at high temperatures. Four adapted strains showed increased tolerance to ethanol and other stress factors, as well as higher ethanol production at high temperatures. Possible mechanisms of stress tolerance in adapted strains were discussed based on genome and transcriptome analyses.

Harnessing the nutritional potential of concentrated whey for enhanced galactose flux in fermentative yeast

Arun Beniwal et al.

Summary: The study engineered wild type S. cerevisiae strain with CRISPR Cas9 system to improve galactose flux from concentrated whey, leading to enhanced ethanol production rate. The strain produced high titer of ethanol from concentrated whey at the expense of biomass, glycerol, and acetic acid, suggesting that galactose to ethanol fermentation is a feasible alternative for industrial waste stream treatment in developing countries.
