A globally consistent local-scale assessment of future tropical cyclone risk

Nadia Bloemendaal et al.

Summary: This study presents a new approach to investigate future changes in tropical cyclone frequency and intensity. They generated synthetic tropical cyclones for 10,000 years using a statistical model and assessed changes in wind speed probabilities using high-resolution maps. The results suggest that the probability of intense tropical cyclones may more than double, except for the Bay of Bengal and the Gulf of Mexico.

Single extreme storm sequence can offset decades of shoreline retreat projected to result from sea-level rise

Mitchell D. Harley et al.

Summary: High-resolution morphology data from Australia, the UK and Mexico shows that episodic coastal sediment deposition during extreme storms can offset projected shoreline retreat caused by sea level rise. Extreme storms, although causing erosion, can also contribute positively to the sediment budget by exchanging sediment between different areas, mitigating the impacts of sea level rise.

A storm hazard matrix combining coastal flooding and beach erosion

Christopher K. Leaman et al.

Summary: Coastal storms can cause damage to property, infrastructure, and the environment, with hazards like coastal flooding and beach erosion being common along open sandy coastlines. The severity of storm impacts varies depending on the characteristics of the continental shelf, with wide shelves experiencing amplified storm surge and narrow, deep shelves being more prone to beach erosion. A new Storm Hazard Matrix integrates these different hazards and can provide enhanced insight for disaster risk reduction efforts.

A Coastal Flood Early-Warning System Based on Offshore Sea State Forecasts and Artificial Neural Networks

Michalis Chondros et al.

Summary: The paper presents an integrated methodological approach for developing a coastal flood early-warning system, which combines the Hindcast Framework and Forecast Framework. It has been successfully applied in the flood-prone coastal area of Rethymno in Crete, Greece, accurately predicting coastal flood risks without the need for time-consuming numerical simulations.

A global analysis of extreme coastal water levels with implications for potential coastal overtopping

Rafael Almar et al.

Summary: The study finds that global coastal overtopping has increased by over 50% in the last two decades, and under a RCP 8.5 scenario this could increase up to 50 times by 2100 compared to today.

A Clustering Approach for Predicting Dune Morphodynamic Response to Storms Using Typological Coastal Profiles: A Case Study at the Dutch Coast

Panagiotis Athanasiou et al.

Summary: This study uses clustering techniques to simplify a large dataset of topographic and bathymetric profiles of the Dutch coast into typological coastal profiles (TCPs) to predict dune erosion dynamics. The research identifies key drivers of dune erosion variability and utilizes these TCPs for accurate predictions with reduced computational costs. The findings show that 100 TCPs can effectively represent dune morphodynamics, enabling national scale coastal risk assessments and potentially global predictions of dune erosion.

Probabilistic characterisation of coastal storm-induced risks using Bayesian networks

Marc Sanuy et al.

Summary: The study utilizes Bayesian networks for probabilistic risk characterization at the Tordera delta in NE Spain, incorporating the entire storm climate to analyze erosion and inundation risks. The results highlight storm characteristics with higher probabilities of inducing certain risk levels and how they may change under future scenarios of shoreline retreat due to background erosion.
