A new model to describe small-angle neutron scattering from foams

Matthias Kuhnhammer et al.

Summary: The article presents a new model to describe the scattering data from foams. The model takes into account the complex structure of foams and provides information on the thickness distribution of liquid films inside the foam. The results show that the average film thickness decreases and the polydispersity increases with decreasing water content.

Actuated 3D microgels for single cell mechanobiology

Berna Ozkale et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new cell culture technology that enables uniform compression on single cells in 3D through optical control. By encapsulating mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a nanoactuator-alginate hybrid biomaterial and activating it with light, the researchers were able to compress the cells uniformly. This technology has potential applications in mechanobiology studies.

Microgels react to force: mechanical properties, syntheses, and force-activated functions

M. Friederike Schulte et al.

Summary: In this tutorial review, we discuss the mechanical properties of microgels and their measurement methods using atomic force microscopy. We also provide the synthetic background to understand how specific architectures and chemical functionalities enable these mechanical properties. Furthermore, we elucidate how the interaction of force with microgels can activate latent functionality. This review aims to enhance the understanding of this emerging field by introducing and connecting different research areas.

Stiffness Tomography of Ultra-Soft Nanogels by Atomic Force Microscopy

M. Friederike Schulte et al.

Summary: This study investigates extremely soft temperature-sensitive ultra-low cross-linked nanogels adsorbed to the solid/water interface using atomic force microscopy. The nanogels exhibit extraordinary disk-like and homogeneous structure, softer than polymer brushes, and can be switched between ultra-soft and very stiff states on demand. Force Volume mode measurements provide detailed evaluation of their overall shape and internal structure in three dimensions.

Small-angle scattering for beginners

Cedric J. Gommes et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of small-angle scattering in analyzing nanostructures, pointing out that under stringent experimental conditions, SAS is often the only option. The rapid development of synchrotron and neutron facilities globally has opened up new possibilities for using SAS, but this method is still not covered enough in teaching.

Surface molding of multi-stimuli-responsive microgel actuators

John J. Bowen et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for fabricating soft hydrogel actuators that rapidly respond to multiple stimuli using surface molding. The actuators can be controlled rationally through different filler types to respond quickly to stimuli such as humidity, magnetic fields, or light. The reported fabrication strategies will be beneficial for the design and production of programmable soft actuator systems, such as soft robotics.
