Ultrafast Intermolecular Interaction Dynamics between NIR-Absorbing Unsymmetrical Squaraines and PCBM: Effects of Halogen Substitution

Guruprasad M. Somashekharappa et al.

Summary: Squaraine derivatives are widely used in optoelectronic and biomedical fields. The synthesized unsymmetrical squaraine compounds exhibited intense absorption in the near-infrared region, and halogen substitution further increased the absorption intensity, which is beneficial for light harvesting. The study also revealed the occurrence of intermolecular charge-transfer dynamics between squaraine compounds and PCBM.

Modification of Electrode Interface with Fullerene-Based Self-Assembled Monolayer for High-Performance Organic Optoelectronic Devices

Dong Hun Sin et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and effective approach to improve charge transfer at the organic active layer-interlayer interface was presented by treating the zinc oxide interlayer with a fullerene-based self-assembled monolayer. This treatment led to enhanced electron extraction and reduced charge recombination in organic solar cells, resulting in higher photocurrent density and power conversion efficiency.

On the energy gap determination of organic optoelectronic materials: the case of porphyrin derivatives

Rian E. Aderne et al.

Summary: Accurate determination of ionization potential, electron affinity, and energy gap is crucial for characterizing key phenomena in the applications of organic semiconductors. However, there is much confusion surrounding the interpretation of these quantities. This study discusses the differences and similarities between various characterization methods through the use of porphyrin derivatives as model molecules.

Light-Controlled Regioselective Synthesis of Fullerene Bis-Adducts

Luka Dordevic et al.

Summary: The study focused on the multi-functionalization and isomer-purity of fullerenes, presenting a light-responsive tether with azobenzene photoswitch for controlling the synthesis and distribution of bis-adducts. The results provide a new approach for controlling the covalent bis-functionalization of C60 through regulating the azobenzene photoswitch.

Characterization of the fullerene derivative [60]PCBM, by high-field carbon, and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, coupled with DFT simulations

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: The study conducted high-resolution (600 MHz) H-1 and C-13 chemical shift and 2D HETCOR NMR spectra of [60]PCBM, fully elucidating the resonances from every carbon atom of the ester, phenyl and cyclo-fullerenyl groups. High confidence fullerene assignments were achieved using a hybrid HF/DFT simulation with a low mean absolute error.

Incorporation of a Guaiacol-Based Small Molecule Guest Donor Enables Efficient Nonfullerene Acceptor-Based Ternary Organic Solar Cells

Rajkumar Barla et al.

Summary: In this study, the introduction of the large bandgap guaiacol-based small molecule (SMD) in ternary organic solar cells improved the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and suppressed energy loss. By optimizing the ternary blend P:SMD:Y6, a higher open circuit voltage (V-OC) and lower energy loss were achieved, leading to an overall PCE of 15.37%.

Fullerene derivatives with oligoethylene-glycol side chains: an investigation on the origin of their outstanding transport properties

Jingjin Dong et al.

Summary: Fullerene derivatives with ethylene glycol (EG) side chains have shown enhanced properties in terms of dielectric constants, doping, and self-assembly capabilities. By utilizing X-ray structural analysis and molecular dynamics simulations, the study was able to determine the structural properties, revealing the increase in transport properties and crystallite alignment with longer EG chain lengths. The layer-like structure with well-defined EG layers and closely packed C-60 balls has shown high order and alignment in thin film configurations, leading to high mobilities in organic semiconductors.
