Do amino and fatty acid profiles of pollen provisions correlate with bacterial microbiomes in the mason bee Osmia bicornis?

Sara Diana Leonhardt et al.

Summary: The performance and well-being of bees depend on access to sufficient and appropriate resources, such as pollen and nectar. Microbes in pollen play an important role in the dynamics of plant-pollen bee interaction, particularly by affecting nutrient composition. This study explores the correlations between the nutritional quality of pollen provisions and the bacterial community in the gut of the solitary bee Osmia bicornis. The results suggest that pollen-derived bacteria may play a role in fatty acid provisioning, which has been found to influence bee performance.

(More than) Hitchhikers through the network: The shared microbiome of bees and flowers

Alexander Keller et al.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests a strong overlap between microbiomes of flowers and bees, indicating flowers as hubs of microbial transmission. The role of floral transmission in bee microbiome assembly and the functional importance of florally sourced microbes in shaping bee foraging decisions remain intriguing. Interaction network properties and microbial filtering by plant and bee hosts can predict potential transmission routes between hosts. Shared floral microbes can benefit bees in various ways, from enhancing nutritional quality to altering the attractiveness of floral resources, potentially affecting the structure of the flower-bee interaction network.

First screening of bacterial communities of Microdon myrmicae and its ant host: do microbes facilitate the invasion of ant colonies by social parasites?

Giulia Scarparo et al.

Summary: This study provides the first microbiome survey of Microdon myrmicae larvae and its host Myrmica scabrinodis, showing significant differences between the microbiomes of the fly larvae and the ant host. The microbiome of Microdon myrmicae larvae varies between sites, suggesting an environmental origin. Families Streptococcaceae, Carnobacteriaceae, Rizhobiaceae, and genus Spiroplasma dominate in the ant host, while Anaplasmataceae and Wolbachia are predominant in the fly larvae. The presence of Serratia in both Microdon and Myrmica larvae may play a role in their interaction through the production of pyrazines involved in ant communication.

Composition and acquisition of the microbiome in solitary, ground-nesting alkali bees

Karen M. Kapheim et al.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that the microbiome plays a crucial role in bee ecology and health, yet the relationship between bees and their bacterial symbionts has only been investigated in a few species. This study characterized the microbiome of solitary, ground-nesting alkali bees throughout their life cycle, revealing that the feeding status is a major factor influencing microbiome composition. The research also indicates that the hindgut bacterial community in adult females is influenced by the external environment, with certain bacterial taxa possibly acquired within the nest or changing in abundance with age.
