Photodegradation actuated shape-changing hydrogels

Stephanie M. Delgado et al.

Summary: In this comprehensive study, the effect of different o-NB macromer structures, composition, fabrication design, and environment on light-induced hydrogel folding was determined. Successful photopolymerization, photodegradation, multistep folding, and live-cell encapsulation were demonstrated. This hydrogel system can be a valuable tool for studying processes sensitive to physical and temporal stimuli in stem cell differentiation and developmental biology research.

Relationship between Gel Mesh and Particle Size in Determining Nanoparticle Diffusion in Hydrogel Nanocomposites

Paige J. Moncure et al.

Summary: This study measured the diffusion of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether thiol (PEGSH)-functionalized gold nanoparticles (NPs) in polyacrylamide gels with varying cross-linking densities. The results showed that the diffusion coefficients of the NPs primarily depended on the overall hydrodynamic diameter and could be predicted using the confinement ratio calculated from the particle diameter and gel mesh size. The findings provide insights into the factors influencing NP diffusion through polymer gels and will contribute to the development of hydrogel nanocomposites for applications such as drug delivery in viscoelastic biological materials.

Evidence of the Transition from a Flexible to Rigid Percolating Network in Polymer Nanocomposites

Hung K. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The formation of a percolating filler network is crucial for the enhanced mechanical properties in polymer nanocomposites. Through direct observation, it was found that a flexible percolating filler network was formed first when the filler volume fraction increased, followed by the development of a rigid percolating filler network. The observed transition aligns well with the significant increase in mechanical reinforcement observed in macroscopic measurements.

Summary: This study presents a method of volumetric printing using triplet fusion upconversion at low power excitation, overcoming the limitations of nanoscale applications. The introduction of an excitonic strategy allows for the control of the upconversion threshold, supporting different printing schemes.

Summary: Hydrogel biomaterials derived from natural biopolymers, such as fibrin and collagen, have advantages in cytocompatibility and biological integration. However, they lag behind synthetic alternatives in tunability, requiring further research to selectively modulate their biochemical properties.

Physical networks from entropy-driven non-covalent interactions

Anthony C. Yu et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that entropy-driven physical networks exhibit invariant mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, in contrast to enthalpy-dominated crosslinking networks. By connecting thermodynamics and temperature-dependent viscoelasticity in a mathematical framework, the temperature dependence of crosslinking interactions is explored.

Correlation of Bulk Degradation and Molecular Release from Enzymatically Degradable Polymeric Hydrogels

Nan Wu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a quantitative correlation between molecular release and material degradation in hydrogel scaffolds. The type of hydrogel crosslinking reaction greatly affects both material degradation and molecular release, with shear having no impact on degradation or release. Rheological characterization is found to be a useful tool for predicting the release of molecules from degrading hydrogels.
