Supportive Care Needs Assessment for Cancer Survivors at a Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Middle East: Mending the Gap

Summary: This study aimed to identify gaps in supportive care needs among adult cancer survivors in Jordan, explore predictors of unmet needs, and assess the relationship between unmet needs and quality of life. The results showed that late-stage diagnosis was associated with higher overall need scores, and overall quality of life was inversely associated with various domains of needs.

Needs of cancer patients during the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron lockdown: A population-based survey in Shanghai, China

Summary: This study investigated the medical and healthcare needs of cancer patients during the Shanghai lockdown caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron pandemic. The findings showed that social support, dietary/nutritional support, and psychological counseling were the top three needs of cancer patients. Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 was found to reduce psychological anxiety in cancer patients. The study suggests the importance of promoting telemedicine and exploring vaccination guidelines for different disease stages, tumor types, and treatment regimens.

Socioeconomic inequality in health care use among cancer patients in China: Evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study

Summary: There is a pro-rich inequality in the use of outpatient and inpatient services among cancer patients in China. Higher socioeconomic status is associated with more healthcare utilization. Household expenditure is the most significant factor contributing to the inequality, followed by education level and rural residency. Targeted financial protection for poor individuals could alleviate the burden of high cancer care costs.

Summary: Chinese cancer survivors have various unmet supportive care needs, with common concerns about cancer recurrence, need for up-to-date information, and collaborative management. Female and rural survivors, as well as those with lower social support and self-efficacy, are more susceptible to higher levels of unmet supportive care needs. Consistent information provision and establishment of peer support systems are potentially beneficial approaches to address long-term supportive care needs for cancer patients.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Unmet supportive care needs of patients with rare cancer: A systematic review

Summary: Patients with rare cancers often report unmet supportive care needs in healthcare system and information domain (up to 95%), psychological domain (up to 93%) and physical and daily living domain (up to 80%), mainly in the posttreatment phase. The most frequently identified predictors were higher anxiety, younger age and higher neuroticism.
