CO2 mobility reduction using foam stabilized by CO2- and water-soluble surfactants

T. Foyen et al.

Summary: Foam generated by surfactants can effectively reduce CO2 mobility and improve efficiency in CO2 storage and enhanced oil recovery. Experimental studies are conducted to evaluate the behavior of surfactants in reservoir conditions, and numerical simulations are used to predict the impact of foam. Results show that different surfactants can significantly reduce CO2 mobility and stabilize foam for improved performance in subsurface applications.

Experimental investigation on effect of reservoir conditions on stability and rheology of carbon dioxide foams of nonionic surfactant and polymer: Implications of carbon geo-storage

Anjanay Pandey et al.

Summary: This study quantified the impact of subsurface conditions on CO2 foam, finding that increasing salt concentration significantly affects foam stability and CO2 molality. Additionally, increasing surfactant amount had negligible impact on CO2 molality. The CO2 foam exhibited non-Newtonian shear thinning behavior and showed potential for enhanced oil recovery and carbon storage in subsurface environment.

Summary: The study introduces a machine-learning-based workflow that simultaneously optimizes hydrocarbon recovery, CO2 sequestration volume, and project net present value (NPV) for CO2-EOR projects. Results indicate that tax incentives play a vital role in enhancing the economic returns of CO2-EOR projects. Optimization results show that in a 20-year development strategy, an incremental oil production of 15.8 MM STB and 1.37 MM metric tons of CO2 storage can be achieved, with the highest project NPV reaching 205.6 MM US dollars.

Impact of Dataset Size on Classification Performance: An Empirical Evaluation in the Medical Domain

Alhanoof Althnian et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of dataset size on the overall performance of supervised classification models in the medical domain, finding that classifier performance depends on how well the dataset represents the original distribution rather than just its size. AB and NB are the most robust models for limited medical data, followed by SVM, while DT is the least robust. Interestingly, a robust machine learning model for a limited dataset does not necessarily mean it performs best compared to other models.

Application of machine learning techniques for selecting the most suitable enhanced oil recovery method; challenges and opportunities

Yasaman Cheraghi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a step-by-step procedure of applying Machine Learning in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) screening, focusing on developing models for predicting suitable EOR methods for a candidate reservoir. Results show that Random Forest (RF) and deep Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) models performed the best, while Naive Bayes (NB) classifier had the weakest performance. The importance of cross-checking ML results with other EOR screening approaches or expert's knowledge is emphasized to improve reliability.

In-situ formulation of pickering CO 2 foam for enhanced oil recovery and improved carbon storage in sandstone formation

Krishna Raghav Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: Compared to sole gas flooding, foam flooding offers benefits in terms of mobility control, enhanced sweep, and improved oil recovery from depleted reservoirs. This study explores an alternative method of foam formulation by in situ foam formation using foaming agents, silica nanoparticles, and PAM to stabilize the foam for increased oil recovery. Investigating in situ foam formation may also be beneficial for carbon storage in depleted oilfields.

Simultaneous injection of chemical agents and carbon dioxide to enhance the sweep efficiency from fractured tight core samples

Rahmad Syah et al.

Summary: Foams are efficient chemical agents to enhance oil recovery factor and play a significant role in mobility control. The co-injection of foam and CO2 has been found to be an optimal scenario for fractured tight core samples. Experimental results show that the optimum foam quality is 0.65, and five injection cycles are the most effective for improving oil recovery factor. The presence of a foaming agent in CO2 enhances the efficiency of CO2-foam injection, leading to a total oil recovery factor of about 83%.
