Circular RNA as a Potential Biomarker for Forensic Age Prediction

Junyan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the potential of circRNAs in predicting age by analyzing circRNA profiles in the blood of healthy individuals. We identified age-related circRNA candidates and validated them in a separate group of subjects. Regression tree and random forest regression showed the best performance in age prediction. Gender also influenced the prediction models, with smaller errors for males.

Accelerated biological aging in COVID-19 patients

Summary: Epigenetic aging is associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and developing severe COVID-19. The accumulation of epigenetic aging from COVID-19 may contribute to the post-COVID-19 syndrome among survivors.

Risk factors for severe COVID-19 differ by age for hospitalized adults

Sevda Molani et al.

Summary: Risk stratification is crucial for decision-making and resource allocation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. This study developed risk models to predict mechanical ventilation illness or death during hospitalization and found differences in the predictive value of age, BMI, vital signs, and laboratory results among different age groups.

Longitudinal Study of DNA Methylation and Epigenetic Clocks Prior to and Following Test-Confirmed COVID-19 and mRNA Vaccination

Alina P. S. Pang et al.

Summary: The host epigenetic landscape undergoes rapid changes during SARS-CoV-2 infection, and severe COVID-19 is associated with lasting damage to the epigenome. Studies have shown that immune cells exhibit aberrant DNA methylation changes, and blood epigenetic clocks are altered in severe COVID-19 cases. The impact of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines on the host epigenome also requires further investigation.

Increased Pace of Aging in COVID-Related Mortality

Fedor Galkin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 5315 COVID-19 patients in 11 public hospitals in New York City, finding that the aging clock BloodAge trained on blood tests can calculate patients' pace of aging, predicting their risk of death. The pace of aging is a significant risk factor for COVID-19 mortality, with greater predictive power than chronological age.

Summary: Severe COVID-19 patients show distinct epigenetic features in DNA methylation, including hypermethylation of IFN-related genes and hypomethylation of inflammatory genes. These results can help elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms, predict disease severity, and mortality risk.

BiT age: A transcriptome-based aging clock near the theoretical limit of accuracy

David H. Meyer et al.

Summary: Aging clocks separate biological age from chronological age, with recent research showing that methylation markers can estimate biological age accurately. A new approach using temporal scaling and binarization of C. elegans transcriptomes has been developed to predict biological age, showing potential for wide application in genetic, nutritional, environmental, and therapeutic interventions in the aging process.

Genetic and phenotypic analysis of the causal relationship between aging and COVID-19

Kejun Ying et al.

Summary: The study found that genetic variations supporting longer lifespan are associated with lower risk of COVID-19 infection and hospitalization. Acceleration of biological age is linked to future incidence and severity of COVID-19. Low levels of B-cell CD19 indicate increased risk of COVID-19 and decreased life expectancy.

Biological age in healthy elderly predicts aging-related diseases including dementia

Julia W. Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that accelerated biological age is a predictor of major age-related morbidity, including dementia, among healthy elderly individuals. Additionally, microRNAs were found to be significantly associated with age, with top differentially expressed microRNAs based on biological age having a higher significance level, suggesting that biological age captures aspects of aging signals at the epigenetic level.
