Chemical characterization of deep-sea corals from the continental slope of Santos Basin (southeastern Brazilian upper margin)

Tailisi Hoppe Trevizani et al.

Summary: This study presents a chemical characterization of deep-sea coral skeletons collected from carbonate mounds and pockmarks in the southeastern continental margin of Brazil. The results show the chemical composition of these areas, including the input of terrigenous and particulate materials, as well as the presence of nutrients and anthropogenic materials. The findings have implications for understanding the deep ocean environment and further research on carbonate mound areas in the region.

Database Mining to Unravel the Ecology of the Phylum Chloroflexi in Methanogenic Full Scale Bioreactors

Patricia Bovio-Winkler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the abundance, diversity, and phylogeny of the Chloroflexi phylum in full-scale methanogenic reactors globally. It is revealed that Anaerolineae class plays an important role in granule formation and structure in reactors with granular biomass. Despite the complexity of anaerobic digestion process, cross-study comparisons can help to understand it better, but efforts are needed to standardize protocols and report metadata information.

Can the environmental health of urban centers be assessed through pollutants trapped in lakes? A study case in the biggest city of the southern hemisphere

Rafael Andre Lourenco et al.

Summary: Air and water quality in urban centers are affected by pollution from various sources, with atmospheric deposition providing insights into long-term air quality assessment. Lakes can act as traps for pollutants, with research showing that organic pollutants in a lake in Sao Paulo, Brazil mainly originate from atmospheric deposition, highlighting the impact of burning processes on air quality.

Novel taxa of Acidobacteriota implicated in seafloor sulfur cycling

Mathias Flieder et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolism and distribution of Acidobacteriota in marine sediments of Svalbard, revealing new genera and highlighting their significant roles in seafloor biogeochemical cycling. Acidobacteriota were found to possess various metabolic pathways that contribute to nutrient and energy cycling in diverse sediment environments, indicating their importance in marine ecosystems.

Microbial Communities Involved in Methane, Sulfur, and Nitrogen Cycling in the Sediments of the Barents Sea

Shahjahon Begmatov et al.

Summary: A combination of physicochemical and radiotracer analysis, high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA, and genes related to methane oxidation was used to link microbial community profiles with methane, sulfur, and nitrogen cycling processes in surface sediments in the northern part of the Barents Sea. The study found that different microbial communities in the sediments play distinct roles in the cycling of methane, sulfur, and nitrogen elements.

Summary: This study characterized microbial communities from the anoxic layers of the meromictic and sulfidic Fayetteville Green Lake (FGL), NY, United States, and investigated the roles of organic electron donors and terminal electron acceptors in shaping microbial community structure and interactions. The results showed that organic electron donors explained a significant portion of the variation in the microbial community structure.
